Bicycle Suggestion?

I'm looking to purchase a bike. I want it mostly for fitness, but also for riding to the store or to school.
I am lost and I don't know what type is right for me. I live in Florida, so it is relatively flat terrain. Also, I don't want to spend over $250.
Do bicycle shops have better deals compared to stores like Walmart and Target?
Suggestions??
Thank you!

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Yes they do....the Walmart or target bike are.......well, OK, but not really the option I'd go with. You also develop a relationship with the Bike Shop and most of the time, get that first service tuneup as part of the purchase.

There is a world of difference between a $300 bike shop bike and a $100 Walmart bike.

some shops sell used, refurbished bikes for less than that... I'd call arouns and see if there are any like that in your area. that's what I did.
