Helmet Skull Cap?
 

I'll be using a bike for everything, since my license is gone. I got me a cool bike, and a cool helmet, sweep xc. I wonder if there is anything I could wear underneath the helmet to prevent it from smelling sweat.

In drag racing, you'd wear a fire cup, or balaclava underneath the helmet. Protects from fire and sweat smell.




Another thing. I checked out bike messenger videos on youtube, and was impressed. How fast were they going?

What kind of material? Is 100% cotton ok?


I live in Miami, 85 with high humidity is a regular thing.

You probably want something in coolmax. They make plenty of head rag thingy's...check your LBS.

I have a really nice welding beanie sitting at work that keeps the smell away.

Seriously, sorry life has you in this "bind," but you will be the wiser beyond it. Trust Vega. As said above, any beanie meant to wick away perspiration is a good thang. :D

Come to think of it, Buff headwear is used by basically all practitioners of outdoor activities. (ie: mountain climbers, trekkers)

+1 for the Headsweats Shorty. I've got one of those, plus another skullcap also made of CoolMax (but without the stubby dangling bits out the back), and a SweatVac Ventilator. All three work as advertised, keeps the sweat out of my eyes, keeps the inside of the helmet from getting too icky, & reduces the severity of Helmet Hair®

I wear a white Nike 'dry-fit' headscarf (for lack of a better word) that has an one inch elastic headband with three trailing ends of which I tie the outer two at the back. Its low profile fits nicely under my helmet, keeps sweat from rolling down my face, and, most importantly, keeps the big thing in the sky from frying my scalp. :rolleyes: Retails for about $17. Value to me: Priceless.

Any well-stocked LBS should have similar products.

If you sweat a lot during the ride, then afterwards take a garden hose and hose down the inside of the helmet. Squeeze the padding to make sure the salty sweat gets rinsed out. Let the helmet dry out in the sun for a while.

Some don't like to do this because they fear the foam will get wet. Its the foam inside the helmet between the plastic or carbon. The helmet is supposed to protect you during a crash and if the foam is compromised in any way, like getting wet, it will deteriorate faster.

But the argument is that your salty sweat is most likely there too, deteriorating the very foam that's supposed to protect your head in case of a crash.

A do rag isn't going to keep your helmet from getting sweaty. Not in Florida, anyway.

in my experience your helmet is not going to smell badly in the same way that a motorcycle helmet would, just rinse it off every so often and you should be fine

The styrofoam-like stuff is absolutely not affected by water. Can you imagine the liability issues helmet manufacturers would face if their products fell apart after rainy rides?

I use a bandana or coolmax-type skully, but make sure your helmet is big enough to accomodate the extra thickness or else it'll feel too tight. Dontcha' love those hills in Miami?! I lived there for 12 years, what parts are you from and where do you bike? My parents are in Homestead, I was living near there and Cutler Ridge/Kendall area. :beer:

I live in Aventura, and be riding in Aventura, some North Miami Beach, some North Miami, and then Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Beach, and I might go to Hollywood to walmart. I should be able to pull it off, since I now can pedal in 3rd front with no problems, and go around 30 mph. The faster the better, I want to ride on regular roads.

I took my stang for a spin today, and it felt same as the day I rode it for the first time. Kinda big on power and muscle. Before that, I was used to it and it felt mundane. That's after 3 straight days of riding a bike.

When you get back from your rides, just take your helmet in the shower with you and rinse it off. I know it sounds odd, but it works.
