Stuck with waht type of bike to buy!

I have decided to get a new bike and have a budget of 600. I enjoy off road but also enjoy going fast on road. Can you recomend a style of bike (eg. mountain bike) and if so, what make would you recomend (eg. Cannondale).

oh, there used to be a @$500 MTB sticky, but it seems to have gotten lost.

600 is a bit more than $500, but the same principles apply - if you want a MTB, go to a few bike shops and see what they have; you don't mention racing, so pay no attention to the entire weight issue (to a point, anyway). Look for fit & comfort. You can take a decent MTB & put slick tire on it for the road.

Or, you can get a cyclocross bike for road & field.... I'm thinking that you can get a pretty nice hardtail in your price range, but you have to simply go & see what's available & what you like.
As with mud, life, too, slides by.

Get a Hybrid like the Trek SU200 (whatever that suburban bike is called) with some other tires for off road use.

A pretty good one. I reckon the OP is in Canada..??..?? In any case;Cannondale ANYTHING is hard to knock, their speciatly is good bikes. Trek and giant, both huge sellers, many choices, fine bikes. Raleigh's offering of late seem good too. I test rode an aluminum Raleigh two months back, I was impressed. I don't impress easily, besides, I'm biased toward steel, pay no attention to that though. Depending on where you live, that's a determining factor. So many fine bikes but you can't get all of them all over, all of the time. You ought to ride a couple few to isolate different aspects and features (color as well) That said, click on these, for comparisom and raw facts if nothing else, good bikes, fun/easy sites,be sure to check all the models INCLUDING cross, cyclecross, all the "crosses".. www.jamisbikes.com www.bianchiusa.com
