Bad day to stop doing amphetamines....

J/k.... But I did pick a bad day to get in what I hoped would be my usual ride.

Except that the weather here in Mountain View (in Silicon Valley) is normally low 80s, no big woo.

It's 96 right now and it killed me. Eight miles into my ride, I say, 'No more of this,' and start heading home. Didn't think I was going to make it.

Glad I had lots of water, some to drink but most of it to soak my t-shirt and cycling shorts.

Note to self: get better acclamated to really hot weather before doing usual ride.... or better yet just skip those sorts of days in MV (about five a year).

96 degrees?
I'll take it.
It does take some adjustment to riding in heat of 100 or more
(ok, read 38 for you celcius types). Thankfully we get
at least 2 days of spring before plunging headlong into summer.
Honestly, I think you did the right thing. Too many
people underestimate the heat and end up in trouble with
heat exhaustion, dehydrated etc.
Just check out any HHH ride reports.

It's 95 right now and I'll be rifing after work. It was in the low 90's yesterday and I was fine as long as I kept moving and drank plenty of water (thank God for my Camelbak). You either get used to it, or just suck it up because it won't cool off until autumn.

If it's that bad for you, go early morning or late afternoon.

Well looks like it will cool down for the weekend so you can get your ride in then instead, or head over to the coast where it is at least 10 degrees cooler.

What is your usual ride in Mtn. View area? (I'm in San Jose and used to live in MV)

No, I hear ya. I used to be a firefighter in a Midwest city and I've seen firsthand what happens to people who overdoit during early hot weather: you die.

I was never in any danger, it was just REALLY unenjoyable.

It sure was! According to the thermometer in my car (which is pretty accurate) the temp. when I got home was 102 deg. F. It's supposed to cool off a bit tomorrow and the weather looks great for the Pescadero Road Race on Saturday.

Yeah, I know there are people in the deepest bowels (literally) of Texas and other places in the south/southwest that are saying, man, suck it up, that's not that hot.

But it's all about acclimation. If your body isn't used to such weather and you don't get it often enough, it's terrible the few times you have to endure it.

But still, the weather here is just great. Maybe a dozen/two dozens days of rain a year, never any snow, no tornados, no hurricanes, a cold winter day is in the low 50s, most summer days in the 80s.... Can't beat it.

Yep... just like 6 months ago you folks in the northern climates were picking on us southern folk about what really constitutes cold weather, we now get our chance to tell you all about what hot weather really is! :D

Earlier this week the National Weather Service was issuing heat advisories with the heat index getting all the way up to 112 degrees (high 90's with lots of humidity). Luckily we're getting a cool front blowing through and on Saturday the high will only be 90...

i went running yesterday in 95 degree weather.... my heart rate was pinned at 195 bpm the whole way.... and i wasn't even running fast!! (my max HR is 212)

Waxbytes 06-26-03 08:46 PM

What gets to me is not riding in the the heat, it's when I stop and suddenly the air is still. Damn near kills me. I try to stop in the shade or even better near an a/c mall or food store.

Now some of you know why I prefer winter for riding!

danr 06-26-03 09:09 PM

I know what you mean. Here in the St. Louis area, the summers are hot and very humid. I actually consider the months of July through September my off season. I'll hit the gym and maybe ride a couple of times a week.

Already looking forward to the fall. Yes Chris L, nothing like winter riding.

Jaimie65 06-26-03 10:31 PM

No offense Chris L but winter riding on the gold coast and winter riding in other parts of this great land of ours (like the southern island of Tassie) is like the difference between being a little bit toasty and bordering on hypothermic. The only time it gets below 4C in Surfers is when you jump into a walk in fridge. We scored a 1C start two mornings ago (got up to 4C about 9.00 am) - that is winter riding southern oz style.

NZLcyclist 06-26-03 10:39 PM

I'm with ya Jaimie.......Frost on the grounds in the morning and not much better when I ride home from school. Today I had my back pack on over three layers (shirt, jersey, cycling jacket) and had leg warmers on, and didnt have to take any of it off as I climbed the big mother of a hill into my home suburb. The wind is what is making it really cold. Wind chill factor.
