Giant (the manufacturer) has really pissed me off.
I am the owner of a 2004 Giant Rainier. I love this bike and am quite happy with it. I used to hold Giant Bicycles in high respect due to their warranties and craftmanship of their bikes. But alas my respect for them seems to be dwindling.
My bike is one of the ones in the recall from the link above. I was unaware of a recall for my bike, it's not like the bike shop I purchased it from has my phone number, address, or any contact information. And I have since been going to a more local shop for my needs.
I was trail riding the last of april with some guys from work. I was behind someone else going down an incline on a very narrow path when he lost control and went down. I applied braking pressure, nothiing major really, and the next thing I know I was doing a face auger. WTF?? I got up and looked at my bike. The disc brake mounting tabs had broken sending the entire caliper assy into the spokes, totalling my wheel and locking it up.
after I get home I hop online to see if this had happened to anyone else and find that there is a recall on my bike for this very reason. Great! I'll take my bike to the shop and they fix it for free due to the recall.
That was over a month ago. I talked to the guy who runs the shop asking what was taking so long and he tells me that Giant is dicking the dog on this. He said Giant is blaming Marzoochi because it is their fork. Marzoochi said it was Giants fault because they spec'd the wrong brake for the fork or some ****. I don't care whos fault it is. The fact remains that Giant is the company responsible for the recall and according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Giant is responsible for rectifying the situation.
But here they are doing their corporate dance while I have missed over a month of good weather for trail riding. And here in Michigan, we don't have that long of a summer. :(
So all I can do is wait, or bone up a few hundred bucks to buy a new fork that I should not have to purchase in the first place.
