Yes, it's safe for work so long as your boss doesn't consider close-up shots of bikes to be lewd and lascivious.

I did not open the link to the bike porn, so I am not quite sure what is there. I have a family member who became addicted to Internet pornography. It has altered his life in terrible and destructive ways. I have trouble seeing anything funny or beneficial about porn of any description.

funny, but pretty light on genuine bling. actually, rather lame.

check out vanilla cycles for genuinely sexy bikes.

This "porn" has almost no sexual content (one contestant did get into it with his bikes in bed and in a shower). Nevertheless, I think that not clicking on the link was an appropriate safety precaution for you.

Pornography, especially the kind on the Internet, goes to the same part of the brain affected by cocaine. Someone may view pornography and not become addicted, but it is very addictive and does grab people who never intended that to happen to themselves. It changes the person's personality. It makes people so addicted unable to conduct normal relationships. They become angry and sullen. Even if their wives did not feel completely betrayed by the husband's interest in pornography rather than in the wife, there would still be divorces because of the personality changes caused by becoming progressively more invovled with porn. Marriages where an addiction to Internet pornography exists seldom survive. It is also very difficult and very expensive to recover from an addiction to pornography. Good books to read would be anything by Patrick Carnes. Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction (Hazelden) is a good one with which to start.

Avoiding pornography is a good precaution for everyone. Our Sunday newspaper for June 10 had an article by a counselor on the dangers of pornography addictions and how easily they can happen in small, slow steps to anyone. The author of the article quoted the book An Affair in the Mind by Jack and Laurie Hall: "If you have any casual interest or a compulsion for any kind of pornography, please find help. Casual interest, even if soft porn will go into hard porn, pull you under more quickly than you realize. It occurs slowly enough making you unaware of the damage. You lose your self respect, ability to reason well, to tell the truth or to love. I don't want you and your family to experience our nightmare. My casual interest in porn led to neglect, emotional abuse, broken dreams, humiliation and shattered truth."

In a relationship? Ok, I get how addictive it can be generally, but from my perspective it just seems ODD that one would bother with porn when in a relationship, let alone marriage.

I thought you were joking at first. "Bike porn" is a slang term for pictures of fancy bicycles, or just plain bicycles in interesting settings. It has nothing to do with what people normally define as pornography. Go to the Vanilla Bicycles web site someone mentioned above and you'll see what we're talking about.

I don't disagree with you at all. But that example paints an extreme picture. It's an addiction like any other thus is subject to similar parameters: there are varying degrees, it is not necessarily a gateway drug, and in many ways it is more a response to an underlying problem than the cause of it.

As I said, if that interferes with something as important as marriage, something in me wonders if it's because of other problems. I like the odd bit of porn, but could never see myself caring for it when in a relationship and certainly would have enough control of my life, self-esteem, and respect for my partner to never even consider letting it wreck a marriage.

I'm sorry for your relative, I do understand where you're coming from.

People do very strange things. Some people are pulled to what they know well to be risky behavior possibly very costly to themselves. Some have addictive (addiction prone) personalities. Internet pornographers use all sorts of ruses to entice a person, whether he (or she) might be in a relationship or not, married or not. Once I was looking at a site for antique farm tractors. There was a cartoon figure near the center of the screen dressed in short blue jeans. The caption said, "Hi! My name is Debbie. Would you like to see some of my other outfits?" I hardly expected something like that on a tractor site. They also use pop-ups of attractive women scantily clad. The first few "peeks" are free. As you get hooked, you have the option to see yet more, but for a price charged to your credit card. In the case of my family member, he was initially enticed by a pop-up while visiting some unrelated web site. Add to this mix the curiosity a person might have to see what it is like to see the pornography on-line about which there has been ubiquitous discussion.

Many who look at Internet pornography are lonely or depressed. It is easy to feel both of those when things are not going well in a marriage. The women one might view on-line become a fantasy woman presenting none of the difficulties in your relationship with your wife. All of this magnifies the perceived problems with the real world wife.

Thank you for your empathy for us in behalf of our relative.

I really enjoy a glass or two of good wine with a meal, or a shot of bourbon whiskey mixed with a lemon-lime soft drink (Sprite, 7-Up), or a beer. I know there are people who are addicted to alcohol. After one drink they must have another and another and another. They cannot stop. But, one drink is enough for me, and there is no desire to have another. Some people do not become addicted to the "drug" that traps another. We still do not know why.

The nature of addictions, however, is that once you are in their grasp, you have lost control. You may know it is doing damage to your relationships and to those close to you, but you lie to yourself and to others so you can continue to enjoy the hit or high it gives you. What is so dangerous about pornography is that it does touch the same pleasure center in your brain affected by crack cocaine and in some of the same ways.

I know a man whose son is an agent for the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation working to break Internet pornographers. His job involves viewing Internet pornography on a regular basis. So far he has not become addicted. His father is very concerned about him because he knows how easily it can happen.

Kudos!!! I think it's great that, despite your addiction to cocaine and internet porn, you still find time to down some booze.

It's only bad if it makes you feel guilty.
