Basic tune up book recommendations?

My bike is need of a tune up. A check of my LBS shows they are 2 - 3 weeks out. I'd rather not leave it there for that long at this time of year. I figure if I can tear down and rebuild a motorcycle I can work through a bicycle. But I'd really prefer to do it using someone's already proven methods. lol

When I get out of the saddle on an uphill every once in a while it will start shifting gears all by itself. I'm sure it's wear & tear and just needs an adjustment. So I'm looking for a decent, simple book on tune up's, maintainance and adjustments. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Zinn and the Art of road Bike Maintenance is a good book.
parktool.com is a good online source of repair procedures.
sheldonbrown.com has good practical repair advice.

Bike Repair and Maintenance Made Simple by Mel Allwood. I just picked up a copy to pass around to the noobs in my riding group who wanted to learn to wrench their bikes. I like it because it covers the most common things for both road and MTB's,plus there's lots of photos to make things clearer.

I have both; Haynes Bicycle Book, Zinn and the Art of Road bike Maintenance. Haynes has a lot of good, clear, color photos. Zinn has more detailed instructions and more general bike info about parts compatibility between systems and brands plus very good drawings. I find myself reaching for the Zinn more often.

See if there is a bicycle maintenance course offered locally.

Hubs that are not sealed bearings are the hard part. Consider low maintenance parts. Phil Wood, internally geared hubs, better quality derailer and brake systems.

If you work on the derailer or brakes consider replacing the cable, they wear out and eventually break.

+2 supcom hit all of my favorites as well.

Zinn and the art of road bike maint is sitting on my workbench all covered in grease and dirt.
Periodically I take my laptop out with me and browse parktool.com for extra info.

YOu asked for a book, so I too will recommend Zinn books. But still I must say that I find the websites to be much easier to use. I simply printed out the instructions for various procedures from www.parktool.com and put them in a three ring binder.

The books like Zinn, have SO much info that there is a lot of sorting of chaff to find the wheat.

Fantastic advice, I cannot recommend these three enough, although for the vast majority of DIY instructions, I just use the book instead of parktool.com.
