Advice for organizing a local bike co-op.
So I'm exploring the possibility of organizing a co-op in Buffalo, NY. I've been looking around and haven't found one, so I'm assuming none exists. If you know of one, stop me here so I don't waste any more time... ;)
I've gotten used to using the co-op at my college, which is across the country. I haven't invested anything in tools because everything is available whenever I want it. Now I'm moving back to Buffalo and I don't even have a bike stand. Instead of investing in all my own tools, I thought it'd be a great idea to try to do something that will benefit others as well. The problem is I don't have the slightest idea where to start. But I guess the only way to learn is to jump in head first. Anyone have any experience with this? Know of any resources? General comments? Any help is appreciated. Thank you! -Dylan |
Talk/email to others that have done it. In NYC try www.transalt.org, times-up.org/ www.5bbc.org.
I would start with a local bike club. Then see if you can get government money or resources. Be very careful about your own personal liability. I would not loan bikes, or power tools unless I consulted and paid a lawyer. And talked to an insurance agent(s). |
