Head north up the NYS Thruway. The Hudson Highlands, Shawangunks and Catskills await, providing you can get over the Throgs Neck or Whitestone bridges. Things get hilly pretty quickly north NYC. There are some awesom climbs up into the Catskills from the Husdon Valley. The Devil's Kitchen climb was used during the Tour duPont. Rt. 23a to Tannersville and Rt. 23 also have big climbs into the Catskills.
Not enough? The highway up Whiteface Mtn. just north of Lake Placid is a true Catagory 1 climb, 3,800 ft. in 9 miles. Okay, it's more like 6 hours + from you.

Are you referring to the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway? This road is listed as a toll road, are bicycles allowed on it? I'll be camping only a couple of miles from that road next month, I'll have to give it a shot.
Thanks.

NW NJ Biker- I think the Veterans Memorial Highway is open to bicycles in the evening after it closes to vehicular traffic. To find out for sure you can call 800-462-6236 or 518 946 2223.
