I never quite understood the CM concept. If you want to foster awareness & goodwill towards cyclists - STOP BREAKING THE LAW!

Pissing people off just to prove you can only proves you are a moron.

The last CM in Chicago turned out pretty badly. See what happens when you block traffic...

As much as I take CM to task, this wasn't a case of "what happens when you block traffic." It's a case of a drunk driver trying to escape from a police stop by driving through a police-escorted ride.

You should also know that this boy's mother is now a registered user here. She got on to try to find witnesses to this drunk driver mangling her kid. I would ask you to post respectfully in regards to this member and her family.

I agree. It seems foot in mouth disease has migrated into General Cycling Discussion.

About the CM in Sactown, the orderly riding in one lane may be more a function of the 1:3, cop:rider ratio.

I think CM can be an affective tool if it is well organized and with a specific goal in mind. If an important vote is coming up that concerns cyclists and you want to demonstrate to polititians how many cyclists there actually are. It should be use more like a ride of silence with a few signs to inform the public of the purpose. If the riders are quiet they are less likely to become a riled mob. And of course everyone involve needs to be well aware of the laws and abide by them. Who wants to listen to a bunch of law-breaking hoodlums?

You know, I almost was about to disagree with the wisdom of that, and then you said:

And I actually think that's not a bad idea.

But it would probably be impossible to control the hot-heads who are there specifically to make trouble...

Yeah, I second that not all CM's are the same. Been in a few peaceful, traffic law abiding ones.

There way more than a few too cool for school hipster bikers who just get off on causing anarchy on bikes, and while sure it might be fun for a minute, it does no good for advocacy and safety.

Please don't think all CM's and riders in them are ignorant morons. Just some of them.

I've been to a couple this year and there was not a cop in sight. Probably due to the orderly riding. A couple of years ago we tried to work with the cops but they really weren't into it so I stopped going. The ride now is a happy one and is a good time, you should come out. 5:00 at Fremont park. I'm Chris I should be there.

I particapated in a critical mass I didnt really know what the messege we were trying to send. I think it was trying to persuade people that they should start riding bikes or somthing. DIdnt approve of all the noise pollution and the fact that some stuck in traffic might needed to be somwhere very important, and there was all lot of them in Chicago. But I must admit it was very fun......hahaha.

When a thousand CM'ers cause as much disruption and anarchy on the road in a month as a dozen cars do every day, I will get worked up over them. Civil Disobedience is rarely taken well by people who are in fact part of the problem.

Lets not forget that the people bytchn (cagers) are among a group that is so unable to follow rules or show courtesy, that we have entire police departments that do little other than traffic regulation.

It makes little diff to the cagers caught up in a CM. They ALREADY think of us as fools riding around on "toys" and they always will.

The only thing worse than a moronic CM rider is a moronic CM rider that is a parent and takes their children to such an event. To bad the Darwin theory did not kick in for these people before they had a chance to procreate.

It's easy to dehumanise people by giving them labels but you have to remember that these are also your neighbours, your co-workers, friends and family.

In the future I suggest calling in an airstrike. With napalm. Time for new neighbors.

Yeah, but with bikes you can see their age, gender, style of clothing, face, ect. It's more social than a car where you see the brand of the car.

I don't think it is and this is just my opinion. As a bicyclist, the first thing I notice about another bicyclist is a) lights (if any), b) style of bike, c) brand of bike...then it goes on to style of clothing (shorts? bib? helmet?) and if I have enough time/slow enough speed, I then notice face. At high enough speed, I just notice "bike ahead".

With a car, it is lights first, then speed, type and then brand. For the last couple of years, I've been trying to see the driver to make sure that he sees me and I see them.
