Unfortunately, you're preaching to the choir: Amen, brother!

There are only a million regular cyclists in this country, and yet there were 439,000 bicycles stolen last year, and that is just the ones reported stolen.

Yup, stolen bikes and cars hitting bicyclists are not top priority.

Its amusing watching the Dateline show where they caught a number of bike thieves. I wish more local police departments would do "bait-bikes" with a GPS tracker stuffed in the frame. Of course, make sure the bike costs over the dollar amount that allows them to press a felony grand theft charge, as well as leave even a beater or two out there.

Sad thing, as long as there is no centralized bike serial number database that all manufacturers use (even custom frame builders should have some type of serial number scheme stamped on bikes), that is easily checkable by pawn shops, bike shops, and even the general public, there will always be a buyer for a $2000 Cannondale that is being sold "used" for $750, or the Dura Ace grouppo that has some slight wear on it, but is being sold for $350 for everything.
