Kona Smoke vs Marin Muirwoods vs other

Anyone have any thoughts/experiences on these two bikes? I'm looking to buy a bike that I can ride around town for errands and fitness, but also with the option of taking an occasional light trail (light meaning no significant technical features, drop-offs, etc.). I cannot exceed $500 price tag. Or if anyone has any other suggestions on steel frame hybrid-type bikes???

thanks,

ben

I just bought a Kona smoke for almost the exact same uses. It's awesome.

where did you buy your Kona Smoke?

none of my local bike shops have the '07 smokes, where did you get those. I know what size I need so would be willing to buy online or mail-order.

thanks

We bought a 16" Kona Smoke at Bike Gallery in portland. its awesome for commuting. I've taken it on a few easy dirt trails and it does well on those too.

I don't believe you can buy [new] Konas online.

Have you looked at the Jamis Coda? Reynolds steel frame and nice specs for around $450. Try running a forum search on these bikes and see what you come up with. It could help with your decision.

How good are you at working on your own bikes? For what you're looking to spend, you should be able to find something nice on Craigslist. I used to have an all-steel 90's Raleigh hybrid that would've been perfect for you.

I've had a 2007 Muirwoods for just over a month. It has a smooth ride even with the tires almost at their max inflation. It seems bomb-proof and handles rough pavement, pavement overlaps and curb hopping easily. I think it could handle some mild dirt trails just fine, assuming you don't get a flat with the original slick tires. It has braze-ons front and rear, provisions for fenders, and its componentry and wheelset aren't glamorous so it's not a big thief magnet. It's a perfect grocery-getter bike.

I like someone else's recommendation of a Jamis Coda. I got to test ride one and the ride was similarly smooth despite its having 700c wheels. If I could've gotten as good of a deal on the Coda, I might've gotten it over the Muirwoods.

purchased a kona smoke about a year and a half ago. as far as what purpose i wanted it for it is the best bike i have. heavy as hell, but indestructible. i use it for commuting especially on foul weather days. and also have used it for very light rides here and there.

smoke = A+

When people mention it's heavy - what weight are you talking about? 30 lbs, 35 lbs, 40 lbs. ??

I have a smoke. Heavy, but you don't have to worry about riding off curbs. It's built like a tank.

I love my Smoke. The only problem I have had is the cranks come loose more than I'd like. Other than that, it is awesome. I ride it to work and back every day!

I just bought a Marin Novato

After riding the Coda, Smoke, Dew, Dew Deluxe, Muirwoods...I went with the Novato because I got a good deal but I really enjoyed riding the Muirwoods. The Muirwoods frame might be a little better for your trail riding and the Novato is out of your range.
All 3 of the Konas are very nice bikes IMO.

I'm not sure you can go wrong with any of those so I'd take the best price after riding them all and figuring out what you want.
