For those who want an offline cycling log program, you can download mine at www.robert-lees.com/bikeware.zip.

When you extract the files from this zip file, run Setup.exe.

This should install the required support files, then put BikeWare.exe and BikeWare.mdb in your chosen directory.

To cut down the size of the dowload (it is still 1.1meg) I have omitted the VB6 runtime library file - I hope most people already have it. If not, let me know, and I will help you to get it.

Please use this program freely, and pass it on to anyone you think might find it useful.

I'd welcome any suggestions for improvement, or any reports of bugs.

Email me at roblees@email.com with BikeWare in the subject if you want to be notified of updated versions.

Cheers! The only problem is that I do not own a Polar HRM. I have to manually enter data into my log software (Bikers Log Gold 5).

That is ok Bruco - I have written the program so that you can enter the values manually, or you can click the FILE button then select a Polar file. This will populate the fields for you, but is therefore not essential.

After uploading the software, I discovered a glaring error when you try to add a ride - I should know better than to make a last minute change, no matter how simple it appears, without testing. I'll update a new version as soon as I can.

    robertlees,

Have downloaded your programme and played with it a bit; thanks for making it available to us BikeForum inhabitants! I think you are on to something worthwile: the BikeWare beta rules. You pretty much covered all the items I record in my log.

Are you planning on developing it further? I find graphical overviews of past cycling achievements very useful: what have I done, at what speeds, over which distances and with what intensity...

Take a look at Bikers Log Gold and you will see what I mean. Of course, this programme is not perfect. It lacks flexibility in exactly the graphical output of data (it is not capable of combining some of the log entries). That is one of the reasons why I would like to encourage you to keep your BikeWare project going.

You mentioned a Pocket PC version in the works, any thought of one for us Palm users? Looks very promising!

    Hi Bruco

Firstly, I am having trouble uploading a repaired version - I am away from my home computer during the week, and my office computer won't allow me to FTP. Instead, I have attached a ZIP file containing a new EXE and a new MDB. Unfortunately this will mean you lose any data already entered into the old MDB.

I am certainly open to any suggestions for improvements. I see the graphing working like this: you would click a button on the front screen, and this would open a new window. This window would display a line graph. You would select whether you wanted to view a graph of weekly, monthly or yearly rides. You would also select whether you wanted to graph the average speed or the duration. You would then get a line graph showing 2 lines - one line for This week or month or year, and the other showing Last week or month or year. Each point along the line would be a ride in that period.

This version will probably be ready by the end of the week.

I only have a PocketPC, so would have trouble testing a Palm version. I'll research the issue and see how easily I could accomodate the Palm environment.

    Excellent! Thanks again.

    Suggestions for graphing:

    - choice between weekly, monthly or yearly rides (as you suggested)
    - comparison with previous period (idem--very good idea!)
    - lines for distance, average speed
    - bars for heart rate zones (which zone (different colour); time in/over/low (different shade of that colour)) and training types
    - combined presentations?

    Good luck!

I've just uploaded a new version of BikeWare. It can be found at www.robert-lees.com/BikeWare.zip.

If you have already entered data into a BikeWare database, you might want to rename your existing BikeWare.mdb to something else, say OldBikeWare.mdb. Then after you install the new version, delete the BikeWare.mdb that came with the new install, and rename OldBikeWare.mdb back to BikeWare.mdb.

This new version has a graphing feature. Also, the front-screen summary has additional lines for month-to-date and year-to-date.

The attached version of BikeWare has extra features in the graphing - you can now generate a graph showing the total distance ridden this week or month or year compared to last week or month or year. The same for ride duration.

The attachment is just the executable - if you haven't already downloaded the full version, you'll have to go to www.robert-lees.com/bikeware.zip first, then grab this copy of the executable.

Thanks for sharing BikeWare! It looks great. I can't figure out how to get to the graphing feature. Can somebody tell me how to find it? Thanks.

Oops. The button for the Graphing feature was hidden - it should be obvious in the attached version.

This new version allows you to see the details (ie, individual ride figures) that contribute to each point in the graph.

Also, you can enter other factors - for example, your daily weight, or resting heart rate, or daily temperature. Anything that can be expressed as a number day-by-day.

Click the Factors button on the main screen. Firstly you will have to go to the Factor Names tab to tell the database what factors you will be recording. Then on the Factor Values tab you select one of your Factor Names, enter the date and a numeric value for that factor on that date and click Add.

At the moment you will just get a list of the values you have entered, but later I will be adding a graphing capability for these factors. Not sure at this stage whether this graph will be just for a selected Factor Name (ie, show me a graph of my weight over the last month), or whether I will superimpose it over your ride graphs - in this case you might see a correlation between your rides and your resting hear rate or ambient temperature.

What HAVE they done with the previous attachments ???

I've been entering details of MY rides into BikeWare, and realised that towards the end of the week, you see almost 2 full weeks of data in the 'by week' graph. However a day later, at the start of a new week, you only get 1 week.

I have therefore added the concept of a rolling period. You can select any period from 7 to 30 days, and will be shown the last 2 such periods in the graph. Therefore if you choose a period of 7 days, you will always see your last 7 days compared to the 7 days before that.

If you have any problems installing or running BikeWare, or suggestions, email me at roblees@email.com
