Decent, portable, bike for uni?
Unfortunately, I didn't get my parking permit in in time, and I'm pretty sure my dorm is over 1 mile from my parking location ;_;
Sure, that's an 8 minute light run (7 with good time), but still, if I need to get anywhere looking semi-professional (and not drenched in sweat), that just won't work.
Can anyone recommend a fair-priced, portable bike (I'll need to be storing in a mid-sized car, most likely). I'll be traversing pavement and light grass, but terrain versatility would be nice. I'll probably be wearing a mid-large sized backpack housing a 17" laptop, as well, so that's a factor. I'm looking in the $350+- category right now, but I could spend a bit more, if the bike deserved it.
Also, I'll need recommendations on security gear (locks, best way to prevent theft, etc), so any help is welcome.
My area code is 40513, if anyone wants to find a bike in my area =)

Dude 1 mile and you wanted to DRIVE there? Heck I live 3 miles from campus and I commute by bike.

I'm talking dorm->parking lot. Which means that if I need to get to work, or anywhere outside of campus, I'm screwed if I need to be on time. Time is the issue here; if I had time to walk everywhere, I most certainly would.
Would I really need a folding bike? Wouldn't most frames fit in a cars backseat?

That's easy - a Raleigh Twenty off the 'Bay. Its a folder that can be disassembled for storage in a car or in a suitcase. Its components allow it to be "hopped up" to approach the performance of a Bike Friday but a much lower price. The Twenty is fun and fast for a folder.

Seriously, Dahon folder. Perfect for the distances and usage. Plus, you can take it with you rather than leave it out for the bike thieves.

Dahon make a whole lot of different folder styles from ultra-portable to std shopper styles. They also make some larger wheeled folding models that are good for storing in cars and dorm rooms. These use 26" MTB wheels so they roll well and can cope with bumps but they designed for urban road riding rather than off-road stunts. Any decent bike will give you a range of 3 miles for an easy 20min ride (that is door-door inc lockup).
