Faith in humanity?

...seen on my commute home today...

Methinks some kind of sociology experiment was afoot.

Drop $20 in the mailbox and leave the bike behind.

Either truth, sociology experiment, or police sting operation.

If it's a Redline and it's a legit sale, then either the kid or parents don't know bikes. They could sell it on Craigslist for a lot more than $20.

If someone did this in my neighborhood, not only would the bike get stolen, the thief would knock over the mailbox, rip up the sign, and spray graffitti on the post and fire hydrant.

Obviously you know which neighborhoods are bad here on Oahu!

I was thinking about where I used to live in Kapahulu. That place was a scary ghetto. Glad I moved out.

My daughter left one of those aluminium scooters outside for 5 minutes the other day to go to the toilets. You can guess what happened. It's a quite small rural town, which bummed me out a bit, although at the same time it wasn't a big surprise.

My neighbor leaves his Orbea in his backyard for days at a time. I think the police here would likely kill a petty thief.

Yeah, lots of cracked out townies around Kapahulu. I lived right near the Stan Sheriff when I went to UH. That was pretty sketchy. Then I moved up to Palolo (way up in the valley) and loved it.

Hey, I heard Magoo's closed down! Know anything about that?

The picture was obviously photoshopped to remove the chain and U-lock.

Yup, Magoo's is closed. They still sell pizza slices out of a van down the street but it's not the same. Varsity Theatre (right across the street) is closed too. They're supposed to be opening up a comedy club there.

My cynical twist... They put out a different stolen bike for sale each day, under that "little kid" sign. If the bike is stolen, well, they didn't have any money in it.

I see plenty of "honor boxes" on my local rides, mostly from folks selling garden produce.

Interesting theory, but I'm not so sure it would be the brightest move to solicit stolen bikes directly outside of one's home (using their mailbox as a cash register, no less).

Which also raises another point, what about the mailman?

re- Varsity Theater.... that's a real shame. Didn't know that.

the best idea i saw was in fg/ss where a guy posted the location and lock numbers to a bike he was looking to give away under the condition that the person leaves the lock.

Maybe junior is hiding behind the bush with a bazooka waiting to teach someone a life lesson.
