Wait, why is it bright orange? (Bike Lock Fashion)

I recently bought a Kryptonite Evolution 4 from my LBS, and shortly after getting home, I realized that Kryptonite's decision to go with traffic-cone orange probably wasn't the best decision. Wouldn't you want a lock/bike which doesn't draw attention to itself?

In any case, I fixed this problem by wrapping the orange area with electrical tape. Considering that the bike is nowadays only worth maybe 2-3x as much as the lock, I figured it'd look suspicious if the lock looked too fancy.

Is this an ongoing trend or a recent thing?

It's a good way to show thieves that you are using a high-end lock. Sounds like a damn good idea to me.

That's true, but you'd think the thief would recognize the lock once they've started trying to open it.

And, in my case, I feel like the lock could make my bike look like it's worth more than it is.

Honestly I think you are being a bit over concerned and should just ride and lock up your bike knowing that you have a decent lock for it. Anyone who knows bikes will know exactly what yours is with a quick glance.

You want to deter the thief before he even gets close to your bike, just like you want to deter a burglar before he is in your house. Will that help with real pros? No will it work with others, very likely, especially the real sloppy ones who could not get a cheapie off but might ruin your bike trying.

Yeah, I'd say it's part to warn off thieves, and part to remind yourself that there's a lock in place. Leastways, that second part seems to hold true for disc locks on motorcycles.

Ooh, thats true. Another thing is that it might also help with actually finding the lock if you're in a dark area.

In case you get lost in the wilderness, you can wave it in the air at the rescue plane.

Patman nailed it...motorcycle disk brake lock users are the primary reason. so many doofs drove off with them attached and dumped it and hurt themselves and the motorcycle.

I thought it was for brand recognition and differentiation. If the motorcycle disk brake lock users are the primary reason, why did krypto make versions with gray and all black?
