Why don't you try riding on the road? Why have you been waiting all day?

Sounds to me like you need some local knowledge. Most of us on this board are probably not from Rhode Island, much less from your particular part of that state. Do you have friends or neighbors who ride a lot? Asking them would be a good place to start.

Lots of times, I'll just head out on my bike and just go where the spirit moves me. I explore. Sometimes I ride out with a goal in mind. Sometimes not.

Just get on the bike and go. I rode this morning with 10 mile planned but as the ride progressess, I was possessed with the urge to add 5 more miles to make it 15 then 20 then 25 and finally finished with 31 miles. A short ride to me does not require bringing the trunk bag, wearing non cycling outfit and bringing only 1 pint of water. It was a nice morning to ride with perfect temperature of 59 degrees at the start.

Just keep all the way to the right, just like you would in car.

You can also look at routeslip.com, bikely.com, or mapmyride.com for local road routes. If you do not like the roads hunt for a mtb route resource. Being a roadie I have no clue where you would find said resource.

Personally, I am all for the get on your bike and ride aimlessly concept.

Try it.
