Jersey Suggestions
I am a relatively new rider and I am starting to put some serious (for me) miles on my odometer. I'm tired of riding in a t-shirt and I think I'm now at the point where I want to start riding in a jersey. Could any of you offer advice for someone just starting out? Where would I find the best value for the money? I plan to buy at my LBS if possible. What brands last the longest? What brands are the most comfortable? Any thing else you can think of would be welcome.

I have a castille (sp?) jersey thats 100% polyester. I like it a lot!! the only thing i can say is that it will itch a little, but the more you wear it the more comfortable it becomes.

I've bought a couple of nice jerseys via ebay. Perl Izumi is nice. I also have a Kucharik which is nice too. And finally, I spent the bucks and got an alma mater jersey through nashbar. All of these jerseys are much more comfortable than the tees I wore, and, I go for bright colors - never hurts to be obvious.

Hi,
I don't think I have ever seen such a fashion conscious sport. Each sub group has it's own duds. Kinda weird. Anyway, this shirt is cheap and good.

You can usually find nice jerseys at relatively low prices so long as you are satisfied with plain colors. Nashbar and Performance should each have them. Check Nashbar returned merchandise on their web site and you might save a little more.
If you really want to save some money, and don't mind not having rear pockets or a zipper, check out Walmart's Starter jerseys made of synthetic wicking material. About $10.

I also like the primal wear for the same reasons listed above. wild color schemes get noticed. behindthebars.com has some pretty good prices on them.

Ebay has some of the best deals on cycling clothing just sit back and wait for the ones you want then bid. I picked up a couple nice off brand jerseys for less than $15 each a while back. Nothing fancy just solid colors but work nicely

Take a look at these jerseys from voler. I'm ordering a couple of them to have for my commutes.

Are you specifically looking for a "proper" bike jersey for the pockets & cut. If not, any decent wicking material with a long back will do the job.
I specifically use jerseys with pockets for carrying food, cash, spare gloves etc. If I didn't need pockets I'd be looking at other, generic, outdoor products, too.

Bought my first jersey recently.... itches. Can't wear it by itself, needs a tshirt underneath. Kinda defeats the purpose....here's to it getting less itchy!

I can't say I've found cycling jerseys itchy but it could be my skin. www.probikekit.com are good for end of ranges/reduced team jerseys. I mainly get Giordano stuff, but I've got others that are fine. I started off with a cheap dri-wicking t-shirt from a camping shop, and whilst the fit wasn't perfect it worked okay.

European jerseys are sized a lot smaller than US jerseys are, except the Voler jerseys (US) are sized like like European Jerseys. It is very confusing! Most sites will list the sizes in inches. I have large Jerseys that fit loosely and a 2X that is very tight.

I second the vote for probikekit.com.
And the comment on confusing European sizing is dead-on. I just got a great looking Mercatone Uno jersey in a 6 (xxl) but I'm having to send it back for a 5 even though the size 6 Giordana jersey I previously bought was a perfect fit. (And the l, xl, xxl, etc. is nowhere close to USA sizing.)
I started out with wicking t-shirts like I wear for running but after you've started wearing a proper bike jersey, you can't do without the long tails and back pockets.

I think it's because Euro cycling kit is based around the size of average race cyclist (whippets, the lot of them) rather than the average guy on the street. Without being rude, I would suggest that the average recreational American rider is somewhat larger than the average Euro pro, hence the discrepancy in sizes.

Santini and Castelli Italian jerseys, great deals on ebay. As stated above you must aquaint yourself with the euro sizing, 1- 8, 7 (XXXL) is about equivalent to a US XL. They are not scratchy, fit snug, wick away sweat, look ace and you have a million or so logos, teams or solid colors to choose from. There are sellers on the german ebay that sell internationally (although most don't take PayPal) and have great prices on TDF and other team jerseys.
