cheap, decent cycling shorts?
any help here? I think that I'm going to take the plunge, but I'm looking for cheap-ish, short (going under shorts, probably) and lightweight (Florida) shorts. also, I am like a 38 waist. any opinions are appreciated, thanks!

Check Nashbar ... and MEC (or in your case, perhaps REI).

Pricepoint - I like their cheap shorts. They hold up well over time.

I really wouldn't recommend the MEC shorts (the cheap ones anyways). They really don't last very long. Just get bottom of the line sugoi shorts.

Yeah, only about 2-3 years of pretty much constant riding. When I buy two pair at a time, and I can only cover about 15,000 kms with each before they have to move into the trainer pile, and I have to get new ones for out on the road.

If you're patient, Steep and Cheap has some nice deals. They're affiliated with Backcountry.com, and sell out of the Backcountryoutlet.com inventory. They take a chunk of their inventory of a single item, discount it from the Backcountryoutlet.com price, and sell it until that chunk is gone. To be clear, they follow the Woot model - they sell only one item at a time, so if you want shorts, but they're selling skis, you'll have to wait around. Generally, if Backcountryoutlet has a large quantity, there's a chance it will go on steepandcheap. I bought some sunglasses from them at a really nice discount, and now I have some really nice baggy cycling shorts that I paid about $21 for. Their service seems good, but they don't email tracking info.
They've had the Oakley Alloy 2.6 shorts a couple times over the past week. Of course, you wouldn't wear these under shorts.

By far here is the best place for bike shorts and at a great price. I own two pairs and they have held up very well.
It also happens to be a small business that is local here in Pittsburgh and since I have been to the factory I can attest to the fact that their shorts are not made in some sweatshop in China. Because of this you also have the added bonus of not having lead in your shorts

Their $26 Ascent shorts are a very good value. I got 3200 miles on one pair before the lightweight lycra started giving out. Plus the coolmax pad isn't very thick, so a pair of baggy shorts fits nicely over them, if you are just trekking around. No need to get special baggy shorts when you don't want to look like a cycle jock.
The stitching is not up to the standards of PI and others, but I have found that in the long run, the lycra gives out first or the pad gives out, on the more expensive brands. So the Ascents are a better value overall.
Comfort on long rides is a function of saddle placement, tilt and fit and shorts will never compensate for that. Shorts wick sweat and prevent chafing.

I've been happy with the "canyon" shorts I got from ebay seller eperformancebike. I got four pairs at about $10.00 each. Things I don't like are that they don't have front pockets, only cargo short pockets, there wasn't much of a color selection, and the elastic at the bottom of the lycra inner shorts is a bit tight (but I have disproportionately large quads from never taking the bike out of top gear as a teenager). I like that the chamois is not gel-padded; the gel shorts I've had feel too squishy.
