Acceptable facial hair for a roadie?

Ok, this is kind of a silly topic, but I want some opinions. I got lazy and grew out a short beard, no mustache, only about 1/4 long. I got some unsolicited compliments from some pretty girls at school and decided to keep it. I showed up to a ride with a buddy I hadn't ridden with for a few weeks and he starts making fun of me. Also I've notice that many (most) recumbent riders have some degree of whiskers going on. So what's an acceptable amount of facial hair for a roadie? Will I be labled a Fred rockin the 5 oclock shadow? Should I just trade in my road bike and go 'bent? I know roadies can be snobbish when it comes to appropriate appearance

People who don't shave are trash. Every last one of them should be forced to ride a recumbent.

Shouldn't you be asking in the road cycling forum? that's where the majority of the insecure narcissists.... err, I mean roadies hang out.
There are 10 types of people in the world - the ones that can count in base 2, the ones that can't count in base 2, and the ones that didn't expect this to be in base 3.

I can't give any favorable opinion because I think the beard/no mustache thing is the most idiotic look that today's "young people" have decided to go with. If you aren't Amish, either grow it or stow it.

I won't comment on the particular "look" but found (too) many years ago that a few days missing the razor was an odd but effective way to get some. Maybe they felt they could clean me up.

    Who really cares?
I always grow out my facial hair when it gets colder here.

If I'm warm, I don't care what anyone thinks about my beard.

*I* am a roadie and I take offence to your posts. I am neither snobbish nor insecure nor narcissistic.

I, as ALL roadies, am practicable and use sound judgement with good common sense.

Do you have any idea how much aerodynamic drag that beard has? What about the extra weight you have to lug around? What about if you crash and get road rash on your face? That hair will make the rash worse and increase the chance of infection. Those are the main reasons that roadies shave their legs, you know - to lesson the aerodynamic drag, shave grams off your weight and for road rash.

Showing up with a beard is also dangerous. Yes dangerous! What if your beard got caught in a wheel or something? Or perhaps clogged up someones chain?

Tsk! Shave that off and NEVER do that again! Disgusting!

I suppose it depends on whether or not you shave your legs.
My two favorite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything.

Lucky for me, I work at a library and bike to work.

I have a mustache, a soul patch, and a small beard on my chin… I enjoy ridding my bike with all that growing out of my face, aerodynamic drag and all…
I have already been told that I’m a FRED by some in the roadie forum…(strange they have never even seen me) but I couldn’t care less… I just enjoy ridding my bike.

When I was in college, I had a beard. A 16-year-old girl told me it was cute. A 90-year-old woman said it make me look like an old man. I kept it. We'll save a spot in the Fred line for you.

Strangley enough, I believe that is the UCI limits on acceptable facial hair.

No there was no alcohol involved in either the compliments or the posting. I was gonna post this on the roadie forum, but since this was a silly thread to begin with, I figured there are enough shenanigans (sp?) going on in that board. I guess I'm a fred then. I'm getting close to getting those girls to ride with me though. Although I'll do so on my fixed gear, since beards and beers go well with fixies.

Clearly you've never seen the 1985 movie, American Flyers and the scaaaaary, hairy Russian, Belov:

Plus, let's not forget Kevin Costner and Rae Dong Chong in that movie:
