Ways to make yourself sleepy . . .?
I ride around 5 to 7 p.m., and about three hours after I ride, right when I want to be preparing for sleep, I become blasted with an energy that makes sleeping at that hour impossible, or so it seems. I do not wish to take any pills.
Does anybody have any methods for making themself tired enough to go to sleep? (And please, no answers like, "Step one: Ride until you completely exhaust yourself.") I've tried taking a warm bath and that helps not.
Weird question I suppose, but thanks for any suggestions.
(Edit: And yeah, I had no idea what forum to place this in. Lol.)

Life pretty much does it for me. I'm awake 19-20 hours a day, and I grab ... well, pretty much, naps at some point in the night before I have to be up and at it again. I'm practically asleep before my head hits the pillow.
Working out really late at night also helps me - for example, in the winter, if I were to ride my trainer between 10 pm and 11 pm, then workout with weights for half an hour after that ... by 1 am or 2 am when I finally get to bed, I'm ready to SLEEP!

Get up about 5:40 in the morning, stay up till midnight, does it for me. Meanwhile, the wife sleeps all day and wonders why she can't get to sleep at night.

Google "sleep hygiene" and you'll get more advice than you can possibly read, some of it good.
Often, though, what people perceive as insomnia is a more-or-less normal sleep pattern. One of my neighbors is a physician in a sleep clinic, and we've talked about this a lot because my wife thought she wasn't sleeping enough.
One thing to look at is what time you get up--apparently it's fairly common for people to go to bed at, say, 10 p.m. and wake up at spontaneously at 5:30, and they think they should sleep more, so they go to bed earlier, then wake up earlier, so they go to bed even earlier.... Even when an expert points out that they're sleeping a full night and waking up when they're rested, they still worry about it.
Then there are the old standards, caffeine consumption, activity for the hour or so before bed, mealtimes, all that. The Internet is your friend here.

Alcohol does it, counteract the hangover effects with a nice joint. Works better than any over the counter sleep medication.

sex usually does the trick for me...
sometimes reading a book that's not too interesting works. sometimes a dull tv show works. sometimes soothing music works. dim lighting helps me, in general.

Melatonin works for me, it's basically a very mild sleeping pill. I get nasty side effects from one of my meds -- sleep paralysis -- that melatonin counters nicely, your mileage may vary.

Most of the people I've heard complaining about not being able to sleep are:
a) trying to go to bed too early;
b) aiming for the 8 hours of sleep "experts" used to recommend.
Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep per night. Some people need more, some people need less.
I have no idea what it would be like to get 8 hours of sleep every night. I can't remember the last time I did that for more than 2 nights in a row on the occasional weekend. But I have discovered that for me, if I can shoot for somewhere between 6 and 7 hours, that's enough to keep me awake and functioning all day. (Unfortunately this past 2 weeks, I've been lucky to get between about 4 and 5 hours per night, and that isn't quite enough)

That one is pretty effective for me!! Actually, even a good 24-hour race ... and I can sleep like the dead. I'll finish the ride, feel all energetic like I could keep going for another 24 hours, and then all of a sudden collapse.

Eating makes everything better, I suggest three burritos and a gallon of non caffinated iced tea.
That's how I roll.
