Should it be a crime to have a Incomplete

Every bicycle has a serial number or should have a serial number.All the police need do is look at the serial number and they know if it is a reported stolen bicycle
but a Incomplete serial number how can one draw conclusions on that?I wish someone would comment on this?If they would make it a crime to have a Incomplete serial number people could post there serial numbers on this site

I don't think serial numbers are regulated, and are left up to the manufactuer as to what it says or how long it is. My Univega has a 8 digit number, my Diamondback has 12, and my Specialized has 17. The auto industry is regulated, in the US, to use a uniform 17 digit number.

We don't need more laws. We need enforcement of existing laws. It's already illegal to steal a bike. It's already illegal to deal in stolen bikes. It's already illegal to commit fraud in order to sell stolen goods.
The problem is that bike theft is not a very high priority for the police.

Yup I think for sure that serial numbers got to be uniform...same amount of numbers that way everybody knows whats going on and everybody can look out for each other & post there stolen serial numbers and such?

Ngateguy, I registered my bike at National Bike Registry. They put your Serial # in a database that police can access. However, my local police are not on the list of law enforcement agencies that have registered. I'm not sure if this means that my registration is useless or not. Also they give you a sticker to put on your frame with the Serial #. The sticker can't be pealed off without ruining it. You do have to write in the Serial # with a ball-point pen. My S# has rubbed off and is illegible. I'm not sure why they don't have the S# printed on the sticker permanently. Anyways, it's only $10.00 and I can think of worse ways to spend it.
