How To: Automated Handlebar End Lights

This topic fits into several BF.net categories so instead of trying to cross-post it to all the forums where it might be relevent I'm just posting it here in the general forum.

I know many of you have seen the handle bar end plugs with lights built into them. I liked the idea of adding lights to this otherwise unused space but I already have so many lights to turn off and on that adding 2 more toggle switches was not something that interested me. I improved the commercially available designs by automating the triggering mechanism so the lights are on while you are riding and off when you aren't.

The link below contains a video of the lights in action, a parts list, parts descriptions, step-by-step assembly instructions, and lots of pictures of the build process. I'm not selling anything. The information is posted so anyone can use it (non-comercially) to build these lights or modify the design however they want for personal use. Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance for checking it out.

With the days getting shorter and more people riding after dark this might be applicable to some of you.

One problem, there's nothing protecting the LED. You'll have to be careful leaning the bike up against things or it could be damaged.

A magnet stuck in the center of my palm while riding is surely going to be a source of discomfort, don't you think?

And what happens when I decide to change my hand position?

Is a switch really that difficult?

the idea is sound
it doesn't need to be a magnet

it could be a simple pressure sensor mounted in that spot instead
so when you have a grip on the bar it's on, and when you let go, it's off.

my biggest challenge is to make it NOT USE BATTERIES at all.

i don't really want to run a wire all the way up from my hub dynamo to the LED on the handle bar.

if anyone has a good suggestion for magnetically induced power that can fit inside that little slot of the handle bar, then i'm all good for it.
