First 50 and a flat.....

Today I decided to go for 50 miles which would build on my longest of 40 miles that I did last weekend. Problem is that it was raining, hard. I'm on the north side of Houston and tropical storm Grace was sending it down. Oh well, I've only been riding again for a month and haven't riden in the rain yet so now's as good a time as any to start. I was going to do two of my 26 mile loops with a stop home between for a sandwich and gatorade refill. First loop went great, nice and easy, about 15.5 mph. Ran inside, made some grub, slammed it down and back on the bike. Got back out one the road and within a mile had a great experience. We have huge shoulders where I ride and I was just cruising along when all of a sudden an older gentleman (older than me anyway) on a really nice road bike pulled up along side me and with a huge smile on his face said "You must be crazy for riding in the rain, you're one of those crazy bikers aren't you?" I just had to laugh and agree and wish his partner a good day as they rode on by in the rain. I still wonder what they thought of my single speed mountain bike on slicks and me with a BMX helmet and a bright orange safety vest. They were super cool and gave me a huge lift.
I kept on and the miles passed smootly. I kept doing the math in my head to figure out if I was going to be able to average 15 mph even with my lunch stop and it looked like it was going to happen. I was really excited to watch 50 miles and 3:20 pass at the same time on my computer with 3 miles to go, I was going to make it over 15 mph. But just as that happened I heard psst...psst....psst... a flat, my first one so far. I pulled off the gas station I was passing and was changing the tire when a good ol' boy in his work truck stopped by and asked if I was ok or if I needed a ride somewhere. I assured him I was ok but thanked him a lot for the offer. Really cool guy. Got it fixed, finished off the ride. 53 miles in 3 hours and 44 minutes with the lunch break and the flat. I'm pretty happy with myself and if I could have convinced my wife I would have kept going and tried for a century today, I felt that good. All in all it was a great day on the bike, just thought I'd share.

Here's to you.
You're braver than me. If it's raining I don't ride. Getting caught in it is another story.
