White Meets Blue

My office has relocated to a tower in downtown LA and I have been spending a lot of time just walking around and exploring the place.

One thing I am really enjoying is raping with the bike messengers that are in the streets like bands of gypsies. Some have absolutely beautiful bikes and some have rare gems in disguise. One thing they all have in common is a real appreciation for their rides and most talk about their pending upgrades like children before christmas.

Yesterday, on the way to my train, I stopped in my tracks to drool over a stunning matte black Bianchi with black hubs and rims and a fixed gear. The kid was as proud as a person could be and showed me all the features it had. Standing there like a geek in my tie and briefcase (alright, I've exposed myself) talking to this passionate kid made me feel not only old but part of the brotherhood cyclists.

I wish I could be a bike messenger for a day. I dunno if I could do it for more though.

You guys seen REI's urban bike? It's only about $400 (maybe less). Dark matte gray, black components, rigid fork. I would love to have one just to tool around on. Very tough and utilitarian looking. Simple.
