Roof Rack or New (used) bike?...

This is killing me... I drive an 08 Volkswagen Rabbit, it's a 2-door hatchback, so I have no issues putting my bike in the trunk. Though it's a little bit tedious because I need to take off my front wheel, and easily guide my bike into the car without scratching anything. So I told myself that by Christmas time I would buy myself a rack system for my car (I work, so I'm not strapped for cash, but I need to keep some on reserve for school bills and such). Well after adding up all the numbers I'm looking at a minimum of $450 for the rack... I also really want to get into road biking come this summer, and $450 will buy you a very nice used road bike...

I don't know what to do! The thing about the trunk is I doubt I'll be able to fit two bikes in at the same time (ie road bike + MTB bike), but if I get the rack I would be able to do that, but I would only have one bike .

Buy the rack. Assuming you're going to have this car for a while, you'll get years of use out of it. My Yakima rack was worth every penny and I'm building a new one in a week for my Subaru.

I bought a roof rack

This was my inspiration

So I bought the Yakima one, it was 20% off. I ended up paying $246 for the base system + fairing. I'm still thinking about which rack to buy (the one that mounts to the base system and bike), as there are way too many options.

I've had great success with the steelhead mounts over the last decade. Mounts with a fork attachment just work a thousand times better than those that attach to the down tube. Furthermore, you need something that locks the bike and mount to the bar!

Maybe there are other options these days?

Sometimes you can find hot deals on ebay.
