Advice, please?

Hellooo. I hope that this is the appropriate place for this thread.

Anyways, I'm interested in starting back up with biking (I haven't biked in years) and I found this bike on Craigslist. Do you think that it's worth the $120? From the looks of it, the chainwheel looks rusted but other than that I don't see anything wrong with it.

Now, I'm pretty much a bike newb so please be nice.

There's a lot of rust. As well as the crankset, You can also see rust on the insides of the bars, on the rear gears, and on pretty much every exposed bolt on the bicycle as well. With that level of rust, I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see frame rust as well.

I don't know much about the value of road bikes, but I know the value of rust. Having to buy a new crankset, rear gear cluster, chain, replacement bolts, and potentially a new handlebar would increase the cost of that bike by quite a bit, and you'd be lucky if it wasn't simply badly damaged with frame rust in the first place.

Looks like you'd have to replace the whole cassette and chain as well as many other parts. The derailleur is probably damaged as well - usually a person will post a pic showing it up close.

To replace those parts, depending upon the which parts you want to get, can cost as much as the bike itself and then some.

It appears to be a 1990 or thereabouts Schwinn Sprint in the maroon color. Here's a page from the '90 Schwinn catalog:

For a 1990 "bike shop" road bike, this bike is extremely low end.

I wouldn't pay more than $10 for that bike. Go look at thrift-stores or garage-sales. It's not uncommon to find 3-5 year old bikes that used to cost $1000 new going for $100.

Nope. That bike is worth about $50.00.

FWIW. My past practice, whenever I was looking to buy something like a used bike, has been to tell everybody I know. If you tell 50 people who ride bikes that you are looking to buy a used bike, one of them will come up with something that you can use.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm just going to keep looking around, I guess. I figured $120 was too much for that bike.
