aerobars on mountain bike bars
hay, i am thinking of getting aerobars cuz i got a bunch of money for christmas and the headwinds around the beach are really slowing me down. the guy at my lbs said you cant put aerobars on cuz they wouldnt fit but i read some of the posts round here and they had put on aerobars. how would i get aerobars on?

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard...I mean what your LBS said. I personally know a couple of RAAM riders who used mountain bikes with a flat bar and aero bars in the race, and for training as well. You just need to do a bit of research on what bars will fit the space available on your particular set-up.

omg...the clamp in the middle is only big enough to hold the stem. the other idea i have is to put the shim, which is longer than the clamp, in the middle of the bar and hold the bars that way.

No idea what your drawing shows, but this is an interesting idea. Road bars are 26mm and MTB bars are 25.4mm. Not sure how much difference the .6mm will make, but i would think it could easily be shimmed. Looks like I will be digging out my old aerobars and trying them on my MTB.

There is a guy along my commute that has aerobars on his mountain bike.
I would wonder about the mechanics at a LBS that could not shim the bar fit.

I've done it. It looks completely ridiculous (especially if you have bar-ends), but it works like a dream.
The guy at the lbs lied to you. Go back and tell him to sell you the used pair of aerobars they have in the back taking up room in the used parts bin for $20. Then if you have to monkey them on and end up breaking them, you're only out $20 instead of $120.
If the handlebars taper substantially, or are risers, you may have a little difficulty, but you may be able to twist the clamps to make it work. If you find you need a strangely shaped or sized shim, try cutting up pop cans.
Hope this helps.

I've got aero bars on most of my bikes with flat bars; safer than drop bars for commuting, more aero than drop bars for distance riding. The shims that come with the Profile Century aero bars work fine as is for installation on flat bars.

1) Unless you have brake levers at the ends of your aerobars, you CANNOT be safer than in the drops. In the drops you still have access to your brake levers while on aerobars you HAVE to get out and move your hands back to the bars.
2) If you don't drop the flat bars down before installing the aeorbars, your position will be higher than you were before in the aeorbars, guaranteed FRED. The cheaper the aerobars, the higher the stack height, the lower you have to lower your bars.

To the OP: Riding around on aerobars is unsafe until you get used to them - espeically in heavy traffic areas. Please be careful.

I used to point and laugh at aerobars on MTBs.
Until I got canned (along with the rest of the field) in a mixed road/off-road race by someone with this setup.
I still would never do it, but I point and laugh no longer.
