Eye wear
I want to get a new pair of glasses for riding. I usually wear sunglasses, but it's not always bright so I was thinking of getting a pair that change tint such as the Specialized Adaptalite lenses. Any comments or suggestions?

I have a set of plastic safety glasses that fit neatly over my regular clear lenses. Only a few bucks, last for months and fit easily in my pockets or panniers.

OT: No experience with Adaptalites. I use these Serfas interchangeables- come with 4 sets of lenses (3 tint levels, 1 clear). About $50 at my LBS.

Just got a pair of the Specialized Helix Optics. Conditions here have been pretty stable so I can't speak to drastic lighting changes, but the lens has excellent visibility compared to my old Optic Nerve pair and I'm incredibly happy with the quality and fit. Got mine as a gift, but I'd say worth the money.

Even if it's cloudy and you're deep in the forest, a regular set of shades does not make it dark. If you're riding at night, you really don't need shades at all.
I ride around with a pair of Ryders on (no, I'm not rich). They seem to be fine. I replace my pair every year or so as they get destroyed (I also wear 'em while I work). No problems seeing with them on until the sun goes down.

Maybe it's just my old eyeballs, but I can see better in shaded areas or on very cloudy days without sunglasses and no, I don't wear sunglasses after dark. I'm contemplating the variable lenses so I have some eye protection while riding regardless of the light conditions.

I've used safety glasses too and they work well. I wear contact lenses and need to wear something to keep the breeze out of my eyes, and use a pair of safety glasses when I'm coming back when I've needed sunglasses on the way out. Works great on those late afternoon trips when I head west on the way out and east on the way back home.

I haven't tried the Specialized Adaptalites (or any cycling-specific glasses), but I can tell you about my experience with photochromatic lenses.
I wear prescription glasses all the time. I had a pair of Transitions-brand lenses a while back. Seemed like a good idea, but I didn't like them in the end.
They never got as dark as a pair of true sunglasses, and when it's hazy or cloudy out, they get too dark. There's some color change whenever the lenses are exposed to UV light (I think that's how they work), even when you'd rather not have any. The change isn't that fast, so you end up wearing sunglasses when you get off the bike and go inside, at least for a few minutes (not a problem if you don't need prescription lenses, of course -- you can just take them off). They're useless in a car, because the windshield filters out the UV light and the lenses don't darken (again, not a problem if you're only wearing them while riding).
In the long run, I'm happier with a clear pair of glasses and a pair of sunglasses.

I'm not a fan of these photo chromatic lenses either, they're convenient, but not optimal. Id tried out a pair, and eventually settled on something much cheaper that emulates that same experience, with a little more effort, but better result:
