    More bikes than cars

Finally some good news: there are about 3x as many bikes made daily than cars.

Yes, now if only people were riding them. In my neighborhood, I suspect there may be more bicycles than cars, but on a given day I see 1,000 cars for every time I see an adult riding a bike.

I think that just means there are a lot of wasted bikes out there.

Exactly. Every year bicycles out sell cars here in Australia, but I don't see them being ridden in those quantities. Much of it is that it's perceived as just too much effort, or childish, but I think another reason is the perception that a lot of adults have that riding a bike in traffic is some kind of innate skill that doesn't require any training or practice. When they find this isn't the case, they simply dismiss it as "dangerous" and walk away. The "promotion" undertaken by cycling "advocates" doesn't do anything to help the cause either.

    A few times, actually.

Although not in the context I think you are asking the question in.

Just coming up to the BIG bike selling time. Spring and all that weight put on over the winter will prompt people to get out and exercise. Over the years many have tried walking and the gym and it has not worked. So bring on the Sun and a few warm Sundays and people will be rushing to Wally mart to get a bike so they can exercise a bit easier.

These bikes may get taken out a few times and then they will sit in the garage or shed to go rusty before being thrown away in about 4 years time.

Well I own 1 car(truck actually) and about 15 ridable bikes...so there is part of the problem and yes I do ride my bike(s) every chance I get, for transportation as well as recreation.

Heh, heh. I belong to some forums where most members are real Pollyannas and you get slammed for inserting a little reality in the mix, but not this site! Good deal.

This quote and the above reference to road dangers are right on. In my area, Wallyworld and the couple of LBS(s) sell a bunch of single speed "cruisers" with enormous tires that can't be fun to ride. They clog the sidewalks in spite of the clearly-marked bike lanes in the streets of this bike-friendly beach resort town.

Nothing wrong with a single speed cruiser if it is used for what it was intended. I put many a mile on a Western Flyer single speed middle weight But once I learned about gears and how much fun they were it was all over But I agree that many people buy a bike ride it a few times an into the garage it goes, good thing too, I get great deals on my bikes that way
