Hand painting fine details on a bike.. tips?

I'm considering adding a few personal decorative details to my bike frame and have been looking at a few options. The details I'm considering would be fairly intricate:

1) customized stickers would be the ideal option as I can just remove them (where/how do you get these?)

2)hand-painting.. it would go over an already (factory) finished paint job. I'm sure there are a few tips rather than just buy metal paint and have at it?

Anyone have any neat pictures of personalized hand-painted bikes for inspiration?

I've been thinking about having decals made to put on each side of my bikes top tube. There are lots of online companies that do custom lettering for boats. Anything that can survive being stuck to a boat should do fine on a bike frame. I was looking at because they have a nice preview feature that shows you what the sticker will look like.

I'll be curious to see what others have to say.
