How exact does tire size have to be?

I've finally worn a hole in my back bicycle tire, so I suppose it is time to replace it. I went to the campus bike shop to buy a new tire but they don't have my size, 26 x 1.95, but they have sizes close to it. Does it have to be exact or will size 26 x 1.9 or 2 work?

Depends on what kind of clearence you have between your chainstays. My bike dates back to the early 90's when tires weren't as wide so I can't push it much past 2" but if you have the room, anything should work.

26 x 1.9 will definitely work, 26 x 2 will most likely work.
