    Back again

    So I have been on and off(more off than on) on this website for more than two years. My last foray into riding was last year when I bought a Specialized Crossroads Hybrid and proceeded to put 11 miles on it all summer. The saddle was horrible and everything went numb and I gave up. Well this year as in the past two years, I am trying again. This time though I am engaged and my fiance is really excited about riding. We got her a Raleigh Mojave 2.0 last Saturday and she absolutely loves it. I picked up a new gel saddle and so far so good. I have about 8 miles on it and so far all I have is what I guess is typical "break in pain". Nothing has gone numb down there, so I am thrilled about that. My handlebars on the other hand need some work. My hands and wrist start to hurt and go numb after a few miles and I was wondering if I can adjust the handle bars? It looks as if I can, but there is a big sticker by the nut that says it has been tightened and to not loosen it.

    I also made an Excel spreadsheet for my Fiance and myself to track our mileage, nothing professional, but I like it!

    Your local bike shop should be able to help you with your handlebar adjustment and general bike fit. It is amazing how much you can "tweak" the fit and how much of a difference it can make for comfort!

    Also, you might find that gloves with a gel insert help with hand and wrist pain, especially if you are using flat handlebars.

    You should look at recumbents. There is a drastic difference in comfort between upright bikes and recumbents. Sun and Cycle Genius make some cheaper ones, in the neighborhood of $700 or so.

    If you can go $1100 or so, then there is the RANS crank-forward bikes, such as the Fusion. These look pretty normal but are still far better comfort than a typical bike. The seat is larger but doesn't interfere with pedaling, and there's much less hand pressure and neck strain than normal.

    Yes these bikes cost more, but then, they won't hurt to ride.
    A bicycle that hurts so much you won't ride it isn't a bargain at any price.

    I would love to have a recumbent, but I cannot justify the cost when just last summer I spend 3 or 400 on this bike. My saddle is fine now, my issue just lies in getting my handlebars in the correct position.

    I'm not a big LBS proponent, but DUDE, get your arse back to the shop where you bought the bike and get it fitted.

    If you are feeling discomfort "down there," you are sitting on a poorly adjusted bike. You shouldn't be putting weight on the soft tissue of the perianal area. You should be sitting on your sit bones.

    When I first started riding, I tried the gel-saddle route. A big, soft, spring-loaded, "maximum comfort" job. I think it weighed about 15 pounds. It wasn't until I got a "regular" saddle and learned to position my sit bones, correctly that I found any real comfort on my bike.
    That's gonna leave a mark.

    Does the specialized have the adjustable stem? Can you raise it so it is a few inches above the height of the seat (and possibly in closer than it is now?). Basically, you are looking for a mostly upright seating position where most of the weight is on your seat and very little on your hands, arms, or back.

    Yeah it has an adjustment, I'm just sort of wondering if I can do it myself, or if I should take it to the LBS? Is it just tightened by the allen bolt?
