Until today I was looking forward to going clipless. I was planning on doing it this weekend. The nearest LBS to me that sells shoes is a 2.5 hour one way drive (local gas is over $4.00 for the cheep stuff) so I wanted to know what I wanted first so I could call there and see if it is worth making the trip today.

I need size 13 EEEE (US size). In 3 days of looking and searching around BF for ideas the cheapest shoes I see that would fit are $225 (online/MSRP), and thats just the shoes. Whats the deal with shoe makers not having wide sizes in any of their sub $100 shoes or even $150. I have never spent over $200 for shoes and I'm not about to start now; defiantly not for something I'm not even sure I would like yet.

I'm off to price some straps I guess. I'm just a little let down. Any one else feel the same way? Or am I missing some magical brand that just sells wide cheaper priced shoes?

I have a pair of Lake MX90W that I love. I did pay a few dollars more but no where near $225. I think I paid around $90.

Most road-shoe companies don't make very big or wide shoes, and if they do make them (Sidi) they charge a ******** fortune. I tend to suspect that this is just representative of people attracted to road cycling--that is--very-light-weight, smaller-height people. It is considerably more difficult for a heavier person to get comfortable on such a bicycle, and being taller makes one heavier so there is a major degree of self-selection at work.

MTB shoes seem to come in big sizes and cheaper varieties more commonly. Ask on the Clydesdale forum who is selling some right now.

I had no issues finding the right shoes in MTB style...

Maybe people with wide feet don't like walking like ducks any more than they have to...

Or they don't want to draw attention to their wide feet any more than they have to...

In any case, the market is probably too small for supply and demand to drive the prices down for road shoes.

+1 on Lake. Their shoes come in regular and wide. Depending on the style you get they'd run ~$75-$140

At very best, shoes are a loser product for most bike stores to carry. That's because you have to inventory so many different sizes and because people just don't buy bicycling shoes very often so turnover is slow. Turnover for wide sizes, like yours, is going to be even slower so they are going to be unprofitable to carry at every level of the distribution chain.

I had looked at the Lake sight before and I saw several pages of $400+ shoes and moved on figuring thats all they where about. Looks like thats where I'll probably be ordering from. I still find it irritating that most brands don't add wide widths until you get into the high end of the line.

RC, I figured shoes wouldn't be a huge sale item. If someone only uses them on a bike I would think it would take a long time for a pair to wear out (I'm guessing). But at the same time I would like to try on a pair or two so I know what I'm getting in to even if I order online in the end.

We carry slightly more wide shoes in the shop I work at. Lots of big footed folks in Atlanta.

You can always order from Nashbar, Performance, or whoever has the best price. If they don't fit or you don't like them, you can return them -- no questions asked.
