Color coordination

Need some opinions:

Maroon bike with minimal black and gold trim...

What color Brooks B17: Black or Honey?
What color handlebar tape?
What color apparel/shoes?

Why, dose it all need to match. Color coordination is highly overrated

Black
Black
and.... wha.....? I like to color coordinate but draw the line at coordinating with my bike. Though the thought that I should pick up a red helmet to match my red bike did briefly occur to me before I came to my senses and purchased a blue one.

I have two friends, one who is studying to be an Interior Designer/Decorator, the other who is an Artist/Illustrator.

Friend #1 believes things should match. Her apartment looks like a showroom for Bloomindales. It is hideously, offensively color coordinated to within an inch of its life. Makes me want to puke.

Friend #2 once opined "things don't have to match, but they should go." Her apartment is warm, inviting, inspiring...everything just goes together inexplicably but perfectly.

Neither of these women are cyclists, but I do wish to hell more cyclists embraced Friend #2's maxim rather than the All Or Nothing matchy-matchy aesthetic of Friend #1. I love a bike where the bartape and saddle and maybe a couple anodized bolts are color coordinated. I think a cyclist wearing a blue jersey, blue shorts, blue helmet, and blue socks on a blue bike just looks like a billboard for BlueŽ.

Black saddle, black bar tape.
Natural leather saddle, natural leather bar tape.

Honestly, I don't care what your wear, just wear something.

It's been my experience that the helmet should be the purchased first. Once the correct color of helmet has been chosen then work down in order of selection. Helmet, jersey, gloves, shorts then shoes. Only now is it the right time to purchase a bike! With the kit fully made up and adorned travel around to all of th LBS and try to match up a new bike. Do not forget to attach a mirror to the helmet while matching up to the bike.
It's a lot like matching a tie to a suit.

just so you guys know, I'm gonna go with the Honey B17, black handlebar tape, pink shoes (if I can find them in male sizes), orange shorts, and purple top. I already have a black helmet...

So should I buy the suit first or the tie? Would it make a difference if I had attended an ivy league school where they all wear those striped school color ties?

Ditch the helmet and get a purple fedora. Oh and purchase a set of gloves and glue multi colored glitter to them.

Good idea on the fedora... I might just spray paint the bike and throw some glitter on it while it is wet.
