Riding two bikes at once

Anyone got any suggestions for transporting two bikes from point A to point B, by bike? I tried riding one (tricross) and holding the other (old mtb)'s stem, but had a minor crash. Eventually I switched bikes and ended up dragging the tricross just by its rear wheel, holding the front off the ground.

Anyone got a better way? It's just to transport my gf's bike to/from LBS, a short distance - just seems like it should be doable?

A trailer, perhaps?

ride yours (slowly!) and hold the other bikes handle bars with one hand. I`ve done this before with some success. The only problem I`ve found is that occasionally, if you`re not holding the bike level the bike will want to steer towards you.

Can't you remove the front wheel of the bicycle you are transporting, attach the forks to your rack, and then attach the front wheel to the frame of the bicycle you are transporting ... thus creating a trailer effect?

"Ghost riding" as pointed out above works but it can hurt your wrist and isn't very safe

I prefer to use my trailer now, works pretty well

I got pretty proficient at towing another bike when I worked a bike rental stand.
