The Champagne celebration at the Podium.. Why...

4 the Racers here. How do you like it?... . Anyone ever experienced it.. ?..I Just never understood it... When celebrating a win. The champagne goes into the mouth , not onto the smelly skin.. Never been amused by it. Maybe I value champagne too much.. For those of you who've experienced it. How does it feel. Sticky..... Would you not prefer fizzy Perrier being poured over your sweat.?..

It is simple tradition. Champagne represents success and winning is success. It makes as much sense as breaking a bottle on a ship. It also is better than a tub of gatoraid and Ice. As far as sticky? Wouldn't a shower be necessary anyway?

Champagne for the winner goes way back, but I don't remember seeing it sprayed before about 1975, maybe a little earlier, at a sports car race in Southern California. It probably happened before that, but at the time, everybody was a little surprised and thought it was a novelty. It always seemed stupid to me, too--who wants that sticky crap all over 'em?
In my sole experience as the potential sprayer, at a stock car race, I popped the cork, took a swig and handed the bottle to the race queen. She looked shocked, then shook it up and sprayed me.

The start of the champagne spraying goes to the 1967 24 Hours of le Mans, won by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt on a Ford GT40, the first, and only, all-American overall victory at le Mans. Foyt can be an butt-hole, and was not very agreeable with Gurney. In victory lane, both were handed champagne magnums to toast the victory, but Gurney has a mischievous streak in him and instead sprayed Foyt with the bubbly.

Since then, anytime anyone, or any team, wins something big, they will spray away. So the story goes.

No it is not all that sticky. At least not to someone subjected to overspray as I have been. part of a pit crew at a club event. It was Cooks by the way. But it did act a bit like dried styling gel in my hair.
