I was at sports authority yesterday, and I saw a $800 Mongoose bike. It was a full suspension mountain bike, with alivio drivetrain, and disc brakes.... a bit excessive, don't you think? anyways, that's the first time i've seen such "expensive" components in a dept store...

Mongoose was a respected name before they started allowing junkers to carry their name at ***-mart stores. Even a couple of years ago, there was still one LBS carrying them, but since the ***-mart 'geese were flooding the market, they weren't going to carry them anymore. Actually had to sell them for less than wholesale, since everybody had since equated 'mongoose' with 'cheap-bike-at-department-store'. As of today, I don't even know if there are any LBS's that carry Mongoose. Sadly, the Schwinn name is going the same way...
Well, I'm gonna bet that ***-mart will find that selling $800 bikes is a mistake. People will expect at least some service for that amount of money.

Sorry to turn your thread on its head Delirious5, but going to the other Extreme.
I was in a supermarket earlier "Aldi`s I think" and this years batch of Xmas "clunkers" were in store, now I know these are "Cycle`s from hell" most of which will be ridden a couple of times then discarded, but what amazes me is the price.
I thought last year was cheap! but £39.99 for an adult bike. my imediate reaction "how can they possibly create a cycle so inexpensive?..

The Mongoose sold in WM and the like are in fact Pacific bikes branded Mongoose since they bought them a few years ago. This killed Mongoose as a reputable brand and LBS don't want anything to do with them anymore.
WM have sold a huge amount of their XR-100 and 150, a dual susp mtb that isn't bad for the price ($100-$150), still I wouldn't trust them for basic safety sake. I recently checked a brand new bike owned by a kid in the neighborhood, (am not an LBS) seat posts and handle bars were loose as well as the BB, and advised the parents to get it checked (I meant in fact return it for money back and buy a real bike, but didn't want to be so abrupt).
It's a tough sale for LBS because the majority of buyers do not know how to make the difference and think a bike is a bike.

Anyone who pays $800.00 dollars for an Xmart bike is stone cold drunk!
I would like to see if these $800.00 dollar bikes are properly assembled. If they are put together by the same guy how does the $80.00 dollar bikes, you can forget it.

The Wal-Mart here has a no-return policy on bicycle purchases. They will have it repaired for free under the 90 day warrenty period.
