Here's a different idea for a chainless bike.
Much lighter and simpler than a driveshaft.

I've seen these at the beach. They hit terminal velocity at a pretty low speed but look fun to ride.

It seems like a more natural approach would be to have your legs counteracting each other as opposed to working both legs (hopping) in the same direction @ the same time. Although, I'd try one out!
