They shouldnt be charging you taxes unless you live in the same state.
One thing that really pieces me off is when companies charge $20 (or some other extreme number) for shipping and handling fees on something that weighs 30 grams. I mean come on people! Just throw it in an envelope, slap a stamp on it, and ship it through USPS!

Not entirely true. If the company has an office or retail outlet in the state in which you live they have to charge you tax. The other side of that is that sales tax is actually a "sales and use tax" in most states, and by law you are required to report purchases you make from out of state and pay the appropriate tax on them. Some states have met this requirement by making the company collect taxes at the time of sale.

Shipping itself has gone up also - I shipped a bike last year and it cost $80, shipped a bike last week and it was $110.

From the website:
Tax Rates: For shipments to these states, we are required by law to collect sales tax. AZ: 5.60%, CA: 7.25%, CO: 2.9%, GA: varies by county, IL: 6.25%, MD: 5%, NC: 6.75%, NM: 5%, OH: 6.5%, PA: 6%, TX: varies by city, VA: 5%, WA: 8.8%, WV: 6%.
I bought something last week and had no taxes on my order. I live in Florida.

I remember well when Performance bought Nashbar. Since Performance has stores in Washington, all of a sudden my Nashbar orders incurred Washington sales tax.

Not all states have sales tax. The states that do quite often require the seller to collect taxes on all items shipped to the state in question. Whether it is backed by federal law or not is of some great debate, and the laws are full of screwy loopholes.

Taxes in general...I once saw a study/treatise that claimed that almost 50% of our income is eaten up in taxes in one form or another. Most of them hidden. I sure don't feel like I am getting MY money's worth!
