February 3, 2009 Sheldon Memorial Ride?

I know it's a ways off but it's never too early to start planning for these things...

In memory of Sheldon Brown, I think it would be nice if BF had some sort of memorial ride on February 3rd, 2009. The first anniversary of his passing.

I believe having riders in every state in the US and the dozens of other countries represented here at BF would be a great tribute.

If I may suggest a theme for the ride, I think "Going the extra mile" would be fitting. What made Sheldon great was not just how intelegent and knowledgable about bikes he was, what made him truely a superstar was his willingness to go the extra mile to share his knowledge with the world. What I had in mind was individuals and small groups going on their 'standard' ride for the evening and then adding one extra mile in Sheldons honor.

I'm interested to hear your ideas, comments, suggestions, criticisms, whatever; just let me know what you think...

It would be nice to at least know aproximatly how many people in different cities, states, and countries participated. To make it more accessable to everyone (since February is the winter in the northern hemisphere and the weather may not cooperate in all areas) we could probably extend the ride to be "anytime the week of Feb. 1-Feb. 7" and have a thread for people to share where they rode their extra mile.

February 3 will be a Tuesday. It'll be cold and dark before and after conventional working hours. I'd be in fovor of doing something more organized on the weekend that's either before or following.

I am sorry, but what was his birthday? I ain't gettin on no bike anywhere near Feb 3 in Chicago. I admire him as much as the next guy and have been helped many a time, but it ain't gonna happen in February.

I think celebrating a birthday would also be nicer, more in the spirit of celebrating the man and his life, the way we celebrate Lincoln's birthday (technicality: it's not his actual birthday) instead of the day he was assassinated.

His birthday is July 14th (1944). Maybe that would be better.
