Fix it? Part it out? Junk it? Try and sell it?

A few days ago I found a garage sale that had two road bikes, and I got both for $10. One was an aluminum Schwinn 564 that I'm going to fix up and use, and the other was a road bike made by Murray that looks like it's from the 80's. It's steel, and I can't read the name, all I can tell is the last letter is an X. After looking it over, I think it's going to need pretty much everything having to do with the wheels replaced, and maybe a new brake cable. Other than that, it seems like it's fine. My dad says I should just take a few parts off it and junk it, but I think that sounds like a waste. Any advise on what I should do with it? About the only reason I'm thinking that just parting it out or junking it might be a good idea, is that I'm thinking that the cost to get new wheels will probably be more than the bike would be worth if it was working fine.

I say, listen to dad. One project bike is fun, even if you have to put money into it. Two project bikes can be overwhelming. I found me an old Roadmaster commuter bike. It ain't worth too much but I love putting new cables and accessories on it and taking it out for a spin.

The 564 shouldn't need much work. I think it just needs a new tire and inner tube, and allign the brakes better and it should be good to go. (Going to the LBS tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out if it needs anything else.) I'm thinking a fun project might be to see if I can get a working bike out of the Murray and the Trek 720 I got for free at a garage sale today. Of course, I really don't know if that will work out.

Where the hell do you find these garage sales?

And more importantly, how do you get the bikes home?

I guess I just get lucky... All of them have been at the town I live in. As far as getting them home, depends on the situation. Usually I pay for them, go home, and then pick them up with my dads van. The Trek I was biking home, and saw it. So I ended up walking home with two bikes. I suppose if I ever find a bike that's rideable at a garage sale I could ride it home, but it seems like every bike at least has deflated tires, and the sellers don't have an air compressor. I suppose I should bring a bike pump when looking at garage sales.

Right now I'm thinking I can get something working with the parts from the Trek and Murray. Just not sure about the brakes...

Convert it to fixed gear and sell it for $400.

Therein lies your answer. If you have a use for the bike, I'd say fix it. If you don't have a use for it, I'd get rid of it. I wouldn't bet on finding any parts that are worth saving on it either. There's a lot of wisdom in knowing what's worth saving and what's just junk.
