what? no kickstands?
I noticed nowadays that bikes that come from LBS do not have kickstands... What is the deal with that? Is there something else that people use to make their bikes stand up? Or do they just lay their nice bikes down on their side?
When I was a kid all bikes had kickstands.

I think most people just lean them against stuff. I imagine there are some people that don't have them to save weight. (I wonder if there are carbon fiber kickstands...) I've also noticed mine certainly is not very effective when my panniers are loaded. I have to have it sitting just right or it will fall over.

Bikes generally do not come from the manufacturers with kickstands, so the LBS has to add one that they buy separately. They may or may not charge you directly for it. A generic aluminum kickstand costs the LBS less than 5 bucks and takes a minute to install. I've worked in shops where there was a separate charge for one, and others where we just put one on every non-racing bike or sub-x pricepoint bike in the store.
Some people just don't want one.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I lean mine on stuff. If there's nothing to lean it on, I lay it down (usually ends up being on grass anyway). If I'm going to leave it alone for a while, I'll lock it up, and a kickstand isn't needed when the bike's secured to a rack anyway.
Frankly, I don't miss kickstands, and I got tired of hearing them rattle when coming off of curbs and bumps.
However, if I rode a touring bike loaded with stuff, a kickstand would be nice, especially a two-sided version.

There was not enough room behind the bottom bracket on my FCR3 for me to mount my old, conventional Greenfield kickstand. I bought a new rear mount Greenfield for $16 and it fit perfectly The purists cringe when they see it but I cringe when I see their bikes laying on the ground.

When you were a kid . . . Hey, things have changed! Want a kickstand? Then BUY one. . . . it is considered an accessory on most bikes just like panniers, bell, lights, horn, rack or streamers.

Laying a bike down is no big deal; after all, it can't fall off the ground.
The act of falling off the ground is reserved for really drunk people.

Do a search on kickstand...there has been quite a lot of discussion on that subject in the past.

Mine came with a white garage door with no windows. I bought one for my hybrid though since that is what I typically ride if with the family or on a more casual ride.
