Help with a bike rack-Honda Civic

I have a 2004 Honda civic sedan and I want to put a 2 bike trunk rack on it...I bought a Thule from performance. It should fit...the Manufacturers literature says so, but here's the rub...the middle strap can't go where the instructions say it should because it would be holding on to the edge of the rear lights.

The websites for Thule, Yakima, and Saris all recomment racks with 6 straps...I can't figure out where the middle point attachment is.

I cannot possibly be the only person with this problem, can you help me out?
When I was young I prayed to God for a new bike. Then I figured out God didn't work that way, so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness.

Can you post a picture of the rack and the back of the car?

    Oh, I remember now...

This could be tough. The upper corners of the trunk are indeed taillight housings.

The trunk racks I see on Performance's site have six straps, three per side; the OP is talking about the middle of each three straps, which, of course, would normally hook onto the edge of the metal at the trunklid's upper corners.

Maybe mount it at a lower angle somehow, so that the middle straps' hooks can catch the trunklid below the lights?

Going to Thule's site, I found these PDFs for the 962XT Speedway, which is also a six-strap trunk carrier:
    http://www.thuleracks.com/instructio...it%20chart.pdf
    http://www.thuleracks.com/instructio...xt%20962xt.pdf

    It gives these "fit tips":
101 Place top clips in the gap at the front edge of the top of the trunk, hatch or door.
102 Place lower clips in the bottom edge of trunk or hatch.
108 Set lower clips into frame holes in back of bumper.

I'll bet that #102 is referring to the middle straps.
