A new bike for Grandad

My father-in-law turned 70 this year and is pretty active. This year he even started riding his old Raleigh Sprite to the soccer fields to referee the kids games. The Sprite's pretty well had it (although I'm eyeing it up as a restoration project) so we went out and bought him a new Raleigh Prism for Christmas. The Prism is pretty basic, but has front shocks and a seat post shock.

Everyone got together on Boxing day to exchange gifts and we saved the bike for last. Good thing, because he wouldn't have been around to see much else. About five minutes after everything was cleaned up, his helmet was on and he told us that he was "just going to check the bike out". When he came back, we talked in the driveway for a few minutes, then he started walking the bike up the drive to the garage. As I opened the front door to go in, I looked over my shoulder in time to see he had climbed back on, crossed the grass, hopped the curb and was away again.

He did come back but he hasn't stopped smiling yet!

Fabulous story! I would like to have part of that gift giving experience. There is nothing like giving a "kid" a new bike.

My friend Johnny is 86 years old and still rides a bike almost every day.

Bike for Granddad.

Fantastic! I wish I could get my 70 year old father to exercise regularly. I wanted to buy him a recumbent but he is having none of it. Is a raliegh sprite a roadbike?I mean a 10 speed or a 3 speed?

James,

The Raleigh Sprite that my father-in-law had was an older hybrid (before there was such a thing) I think it was a five speed

This time around we got him a Raleigh Prism. Here's the link to the Prism and some other models on the Canadian site. http://www.raleigh-canada.ca/index1.htm The American site has models that are listed as numbers but I'm sure they have a similar set up in the "Cross" or "Sport Comfort" categories

The Prism is a 21 speed with a triple front crankset, front shocks and a seatpost shock. We've had some good weather (until tomorrow apparently) and he's been out on his bike every day since he got it.
