Road Rage, what would you do??
A group of cyclest riding in single file gets approached by a driver that is beeping there horn and reving the engine and then at the next stop sign (1/8th of a mile away) and gets out of the vehicle and approaches the bikers and yells at them to "get off the road, you do not belong there" and then she has the car in reverse and a cyclist tries to put the car in park gets kicked. After that the driver calls the police to report that she is getting draged out of her car..
This happened tuesday 12/30/03 what would you do?? Several members of the Cincinnati cycle club said to press charges against the driver and then some said to just drop it... Thanks for you input.. |
Start a brain transplant fund raiser for the woman.
Seriously, I would press charges if there is any wrong doing she can be held accountable for. |

There seem to be a number of motorists in this area that believe that cyclists don't belong on the road. Some are suggesting education programs and articles in local newspapers. Others believe something must be done to discourage others from behaving this way. Also, the local police have her name and license no. and indicated that if she presses charges they will likely press charges against her.

I'm in favor of bringing back stocks on the town common. Put her there for a week or so and let the local cyclists pelt her daily with rotten produce. Other than that, a well written letter to the editor will at least make you feel better, and MAY open the eyes of a few drivers who are unaware of a little thing called THE LAW!!!

I would smile a s*i* eating grin and report them, I would give them no ammunition to use against me. I would not say anything, or do anything, most importantly I would not touch their car.

Press charges..It would be good for the public to see the results of such stupidity in the paper. Might end some of this foolishness....I have encountered that kind of crap..
I have had a really difficult time restraining myself.. I am not one to just sit back and take it...Just try to avoid physical violence. They can't be led to think they have a right to such opinions, when the drivers manual says different. |
You have an obligation to the rest of the cycling public to report and press charges against this woman. If not for yourself, do it for your fellow cyclist who may take a fender from this lady one day. She is dangerous, and in serious need of some negative reinforcement for her actions.

That comes mostly from jealousy! They see us and are jealos that we are in shape and look good!!! |
As much as I ride, and don't like to get in these discussions, I had a problem over New Year's day. My family, who know I ride, and had ridden over to the family get together was hurranging about bicycle riders on the road when a very nice bike path their taxes had paid for wasn't being used. I only got the tail of the discussion but I asked if it was time to pick on bikers. The family said no that they were all impressed with my riding everywhere, that I was probably the most fit of the members of the family at the table. I then launched into why bikers ride on the road, and why sidewalks/bike paths aren't the safest place for a biker. They all sat quiet and played with their food. Having had my say, the topic quickly moved on to other topics.
I've been yelled at to get on the sidewalks before. I've been glared at and stayed my place. Sure they loose it, but that's on them. As long as I am following the rules of the road, ie, traffic laws, stopping at lights, stop signs, riding as close to the right as is possible without endangering myself or my machine. I don't understand the mind of a driver that would do that sort of thing to a smaller vehicle. I don't think it is jealousy, I suppose it might be their own fear of not being able to safely pass or something. I had a roommie that had gotten into a pushing match at a light with a car that thought my roommie needed to get out of the way so they could make a right hand turn. The car ruined my roomie's rear wheel, and my roomie pressed charges. Turned out that the guy was "known" for doing this stuff to bikers, and 5-Oh was happy to take him away for the day. It takes all kinds, and it would seem that the minority of us need to educate the majority. Our lawmakers have allowed us the road, with in reason. It is up to us to follow and present ourselves to the majority in such a way as to gain respect. I always wonder what one of these yelling ninnies would do if their child came up on them or had attended one of the rides they have taken on. I wonder if they would eat crow, or rant even more. I say a prayer that they won't ever have to hear the horror stories their kid might tell them when they cut me off. I know it takes all kinds, it's what makes the world fun, and cycling even funner. Keep the faith. |
Ironically, I graduated from the high school that is the meeting place for this club ride. It is a rural community and in my driver's ed class I was taught to respect all slow moving vehicles, be it tractors, dump trucks with heavy loads, cyclists or pedestrians. Yes, they were frustrating because they were slow but that's just a fact of life. You learn to accept that in a rural community.
My brothers, sister and I often rode or walked on the roads in this area so it distresses me that the cycling community is being treated with such hostility. Our club has been riding in this area for years, they are very safe responsible cyclists, I know, I rode with them right before Thanksgiving. To my knowledge it is only recently that such incidents have been occurring. This area is growing and has lots of newcomers. Maybe they don't understand the ways of a rural community and cyclists are one more aggravation they have to put up with. On the other hand, this ride has been on going for years. If this lady hated cyclists so much she could have avoided the area. Since there seem to be a number of motorists who believe that cyclists have no right on the road there is a serious need for educating the public in the Cincinnati area to cyclist rights. I believe the place to start is the community newspapers and would love to see some kind of compaign in the media. As for this lady, if she continues this kind of irrational/ illegal behavior she'll most likely wind up in more serious trouble. Kathi |
I did a search on the community of Harrison, Ohio, where this incident took place. This is their description of what they believe their community is like. There is also a link for comments. I found the e-mail of the editor of the Harrison Press, the local newspaper. When Clear Channel in Cleveland promoted harrassing cyclists and the cycling community complained the company backed down. I believe this community needs to hear our protests.

Just so I understand this - After the incident on the road the motorist gets out of the car, yells at the cyclists, then gets back in the car. The motorist tries to put the car in reverse, either to leave or run someone over, but a cyclist leaning inside the car tries to put it back in park. This cyclist then gets kicked by who? The motorist? So the motorist gets back out of the car then? What I am trying to understand is the sequence of events here. Sure, the motorist should not have yelled at the cyclists. BUT if the cyclist leaned inside the car to grab the gear shift lever then this most likely enraged the motorist who kicked the cyclist. I am not saying one or the other is justified here, I am trying to be fair and understand what exactly happened. Perhaps you can explain the sequence of events for me again please.
