PERFORMANCE BIKE BUYS SAN DIEGO
CHAPEL HILL, NC Performance Bicycle Shop bought San Diego's Bike USA, a retail chain with seven locations in San Diego County, California. Performance Bicycle Shop is the retail division of Performance Inc., North America's leading mail-order and online bike parts, clothing and accessories company. Sales through the division account for about half of the company's overall business. Performance bought mail-order and retail company Bike Nashbar and five Washington D.C.-area Bike USA stores last year. The company now has 43 retail locations. "The Bike USA acquisition is evidence that we continue to aggressively grow the retail side of our business by not only opening new Performance stores, but also by acquiring other successful cycling stores when it makes financial sense to do so," said Garry Snook, Performance's founder and chief executive officer. Since Don and Jerie Clark opened Bike USA in 1989 the business has grown to seven locations and had been named best bike shop in San Diego by local papers several times. "We have no doubt that our customers will appreciate the service and improvements Performance will provide," Don Clark said. The fact that Bike USA carries Trek and Specialized--brands that do not sell to mail order companies--is something that "is still being worked through," said Stuart Westland, Performance's director of marketing. The San Diego shops will take on the Performance name and undergo "the normal business changes," Westland said.
