Specialized HardRock

I am trying to determine the age (and potential value) of a neighbour's Specialized HardRock Mountain bike. I am guessing late 90's but am not totally sure. It has cantilever brakes, 21 speed, Altus derailleur, Twist style indexed shifters, a rather plump padded seat. This is a Canadian bike -- not sure if they are different than American models. Anyone hazard a guess or can point me to online resource to help me?

www.bikepedia.com Use the "Complete Bicycles and Frames" on the left menu. Specialized hasn't changed worlds on the Hardrocks, so initially you might want to key on color when looking through the years. Obviously if the bike is blue and 1999 was red it ain't right :-)

That should get you close. There's some info out there missing, like I know my daughters Trek MTB doesn't show in the list as having been available in purple/silver but hers sure is.

In riding shape it's probably worth $100. Less if it needs any repairs.

Cantilever brakes and 21 speed say "early 90's" to me. Pretty much everything after about 1995 or 1996 has linear pull brakes.

1997 seems most likely - I think still without linear pull brakes. Other components and colour seem to match. Thanks for the info
