Anyone else do this? MTB shifters on Drop Bars
When I first got my Schwinn 564, it had downtube shifters, and I hated them. Looking at other types of shifters, most seemed either expensive(Brifters) or not much better than the DT shifters. (everything else made for use with drop bars) So then I realized that MTB Thumb shifters would actually probably be the best choice. I finally got done installing them today, and they work great. Here are some pics (Yes, I know I could have picked a better color for the bar tape)
Anyone else have have some unusual handlebar/shifter combinations? Aside from that Kent GMC Denali, I haven't seen anything like this.

No but I kinda like the idea. This will give me a use for all those MTB shifter I have. Contrary to old stem shifters at least these wont impale you in the crotch. (happened to me)

I saved your pictures if you don't mind. You would lose room and possibly a hand position on the bars...but I usually ride the drops anyways.
On a related note I LOVE downtube shifters. But to each his own I guess.

The mtb clicker shifters (with two switches) feels more comforatable to me. . . but i won't have any shifters on my road bike ^^; if i did, i'd consider switching these with the downtube shifters, they just feel solid.

they make Paul's thumbie adaptors with a 23.8 diameter clamp for drop bars. I've seen setups with the shifter mounted just under and inside of the brake lever

That looks awesome! I hate my DT shifters as well; and I've been thinking about doing bar-end shifters but modern after market ones are expensive!

Some of the guys who work for Rivendell put old-school friction shifters on their bars. A preferred location is up next to the stem. Rivendell sells these shifters for about $20 at their web store. They work well with any bike, six speeds, eight speeds, ten speeds.
They look like the "Paul" shifters in CS1's photo up above in this thread, but are very cheap.
