Eggbeater candy pedals on road bike?
I'm living in a very rural area south of Phoenix and because of where I live never have anyone to ride with. Thats fine I guess but it increases my anxiety about breaking down out in the desert and having a long walk back to whereever.
For years I've ridden my road bike with SPeedplay pedals and cant complain much. Out here however the sand and grit causes me to have major maintainance time, and if I ever had to, walking in Sidi Genius Road shoes with Speedplay cleats is a short distance exercise only!
I bought some eggbeater pedals for my mountain bike and have zero complaints, THese pedals are great for the purpose and I am serioulsy considering replacing the Speedplays with one of the Eggbeater models. I'd like to be able to ride both bikes with the same Sidi Dominator MTB shoes.
The Eggbeater Candy model looks good - because it seems to provide a bit more support under the foot than the minimalist plain Eggbeater models - as does the road specific "Quattro". My question re: the Quattro is will it work with MTB shoes or only smooth soled treadless Road shoes?
Anyone have any relevent experience they are willing to share using Eggbeater pedals (any models) on a road bike?
Thanks much
cheers
Jack

I have Candy Cs on my Orbea, have no complaints. The shoes I use are walkable and normal looking for when I go someplace.

Not Eggbeaters but I've used mountain bike shoes and pedals for well over 10 years now on all my bikes. I don't see why you'd use a pedal/shoe/cleat combination that are nearly impossible to walk in. Mountain bike shoes are every bit as stiff as road shoes and you don't look that funny while using them. If you have to, you can walk literally for miles in them. I have

I currently use Quattros with my road bike and Candies with my MTB. The Quattros come with three hole cleats that only work with road shoes. The Candies come with two hole cleats which will work with all MTB shoes and some road shoes. The website says that the Candy cleats are not compatible with the Quattro pedals. I find that they work perfectly fine unless you are using mountain shoes that have thick tread. Mine will work but it is very hard to unclip the shoe. The Quattros will work fine with the Candies.

I have Eggbeaters on my commuter bike and Quattros on my road bike.
My mtn bike shoes and cycling sandals will fit onto the Quattros but can come unclipped if too much upward force is used.

I tried some Smarties. Didn't like them at all compared to my mtn SPD's on road bike. No wrench flats for one thing. Having had to deal with difficult removal of pedals before, no way I'm putting pedals that have no provision for a pedal wrench on my Campy crankarms.
They also tend to be a little iffy on Shimano and Time shoes, often requiring experimenting with or without the supplied shim.
The whole eggbeater concept is sort of like taking Time ATACs and adding all-round entry and extreme simplicity for dealing with mud. To me, not really necessary on a road bike. On the candies and smarties, they put a plastic cage around it, which seems to defeat the purpose of all-round entry anyway.
But if you're already using an eggbeater model on another bike and you want interchangeability between it and your road bike, there's no problem with that. I mean, they do work once you have the cleat shimmed or not shimmed depending on what you need for your shoe.

I also use Candy's on my fair weather cyclocross commuter and foul weather tourer commuter and Eggbeaters on the pure xc hardtail with the four pair of shoes mentioned above. The Candy's platform is a tad small but they work just fine for the usual road work. I've found the Eggbeater's lack of a platform to get a little uncomfortable on longer rides in shoes that lack really stiff soles like the wet weather and touring shoes mentioned above.

I have Quattros on one bike, and plain Eggbeaters on three others. My shoes with the Eggbeater cleats work on the Quattros, but not as well as my shoes with the Quattro-specific cleats. Sometimes it's harder to clip in, sometimes it's harder to clip out.
If I had to choose only one, I'd go for the plain eggbeaters over the Quattros (or the Candys or Smarties, both of which I've also used). The Quattros platform doesn't seem to alleviate the hot-foot issues I sometimes have on longer rides, and the plain Eggbeaters are lighter and quieter (the Quattros and the Candys are prone to squeaking).

To be more precise, I can get myself in and out of the Quattros with a couple of the spd shoes but the edge of the sole tends to ride on top the bulge for the inboard pedal bearing. Doesn't work all that well so I stick to road shoes with the Quattros.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
At the moment, I've got the plain Eggbeaters on that bike, which work fine with the MTB shoes (of course ) and the Quattro three-hole cleats on my Sidi Genius 5s. If I plan on riding long distances, I'll use the roadie shoes, because the cleat plate, being nice & big, keeps me from feeling like I'm using a tiny pedal.

I have Candys on my mountain & road bike. I'm using MTB shoes. No complaints, they work well. When I have a few bcks extra I might get a pair of road-specific shoes.
